I am aware of the restrictions on leased hardware. How can I purchase a DirecTV DVR that is considered "owned" equipment? Does anyone know where I can order an HR24 and specify a model 500? I called Solid Signal, and they won't guarantee a model 500. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Solid Signal doesnt sell owned boxes. Your only choices are the buy/sell forum here or craigslist/eBay with their associated chances of being ripped off.

Directv will sell you an owned box (access card department), however, they wont guarantee which kind you get.

If you decide to get a DVR from ebay, craigslist, etc make sure you get the Receiver ID and check with DIRECTV to determine the leased/owned status. Just because a seller says it's owned doesn't mean it actually is.

Buyer Beware.

If they would sell you a box could it be one you already lease?

Just askin, aside from cramming in a bigger HD for me I don't see any real reason to own one.

Access Card cant send any particular model anymore than any other dept can....why do you insist on an owned one? There is no differnece in how they are treated by the company.....lease price for an HDDVR 199. purchase option 499....all treated the same....

We've been told in the past that the real world situation is that since so few receivers are bought this way, that the order is hand picked and you end up with a 24. Maybe not officially guaranteed, but it works out in the end.

I want an owned system because this allows me the freedom of doing what I want with the hardware. Based on the responses so far, owning the box doesn't seem to be very straightforward.

I called DTV Customer support, and they told me I could upgrade to an HR24 for $100+shipping. I placed the order, and today I received a refurbished HR21. :(

So, I cancelled the DTV order, returned the unwanted equipment, and ordered a HR24-500 from Weaknees for $200 (which is a leased unit).

There are many reasons to want to "OWN" a DVR particularly an HR24-500 as I think it works Better than the other HR24 Models.

You can Replace the Internal Hard Drive without Violating the Directv TOS.

You can Suspend the DVR or Relocate it to your RV, etc.

I can see the advantages of owning vs leasing, what I can't see is paying 4X as much for owned. Any advantage to the owned model evaporates when that is added to the equation.

I agree. I only paid $100 more than the "lease" price for my HR24. It was worth it to have an internal 2TB.

I paid $150 for one Owned HR24-500 and $300 for another one so it was worth it for me as I put 2 TB Drives in them as soon as I got them and I can Suspend them if need be or take them in my RV when I go RVing or on a Vacation to the Mountains.

If you have a receiver is owned and it dies DIRECTV will replace it but it will revert to a lease...unless you have the Protection Plan. With the PP it will be replaced with a receiver with an owned status

If you have owned receivers and want them to stay that way you'll have to pay for the PP.

Which is why I Opt for the PP. I want to Own my DVRs so I can Replace the Internal Drive and take them with me in my RV.

I have the PP myself for the same reason. My receivers are owned. AAMOF, I just had a DVR replaced under the PP.
