Due to circumstances beyond our control, the GF and I have been forced to move to a location where we can not get DirecTV. Since I will soon be calling DirecTV to cancel everything, I have a few last questions I was wondering if I could get some help with:

First, about how long does it take to get the recovery kits and what goes inside each besides the receiver, remote, and power cord, if anything?

Second, is there going to be any sort of an issue getting the recovery kit sent to me at an apartment building with secure access and very small mailboxes?

Third, because of the expenses incurred in our relocation we will likely be unable to pay our final bill on time, as it would mean we would not have enough money for other expenses needed in order to get things going smoothly at the new place. Will DirecTV at any point simply charge the card we have on file without our authorization, and if so, how long do we have and is there any way to prevent that?

Edit: whoops meant to put this in general. Mod please move if warranted.

Before you call and cancel - Call and ask for movers connection- When D* comes to install they will find you can't get the service and you will be free at that time.

Let them do it that way - it will save you time and possible trouble.

I'm already long out of contract if that is the issue.

Are you wanting to cancel subscription service with DirecTV?

If the answer is no, I'd suggest doing the Movers program. (Regardless of your awareness for availability of service at your next address.)

They will charge the card. If its a debit card, go online and switch it to a credit card before you cancel. Then you can make small payments on the credit card.
Do you know when they will charge the card tho? That's what I am wondering.

I really have no idea when they would charge the card. I would think that would be greatly dependent on your conversation with the retention department when you cancel, and how much the outstanding balance is. You could always ask for a repayment term. Sans making arrangements with them to pay the balance off, you would be subject to being charged via your card on file by the terms of their current Terms of Service, which you can read on their website. By reading that section on Cancellation, it will eliminate any guessing.

This is what I would do.

I would say that I want to remain a D* client, but due to an unforeseen event, I need to temporarily move. Because of said event, I am also not able to pay the balance on time.

Therefore, I would like to set up a payment plan with D*, and upon my return, reup as a subscriber.

At this point, what does D* do? It can ask you to return your equipment, but once you do so, D* can no longer count you as a subscriber. And if they send your account to a collections agency, they will at most get 50 cents on the dollar.

It behooves them to work with you.

The PayTv market has stagnated, morphing into a battle for market share. And since you already have the equipment, it is in D* interest to keep you as a customer.

Good luck.

Why would they send the account to collections? They will simply charge any debit or credit card that has ever been used on the account to get the bill paid. They won't need to mess around with 50 cents on the dollar...LOL

I really don't understand your situation, but good luck to you.

Dont' you prepay for services with DirecTV? If so then he might not owe as much as he thinks he does. If you are only 2 weeks into your month you would only have to pay them half of your normal bill. I would call and ask to suspend services and see how much that you would need to pay to be able to do so.

That said I hope you get everything worked out. I was laid off for 7 months a couple years ago and know how much of PITA stuff like this can be. DirecTV usually does try to help you out as much as they can though.
