Switching back to Dish this week but would like to spend the weekend watching the remaining shows on my HR2-100. My old SD DVR from DTV would not replay recorded shows after it was disconnected from the coax satellite lines and I'm worried this will be the same way.

Is there a trick to watching recorded shows after cancelling service or disconnecting the satellite feeds?

Thanks!

The dvr should work for a while with out a sat connection. Keep in mind you only have a little while before they will charge you for not returning a leased unit.
If he disconnects the sat feeds and the phone lines and network connections and leaves the unit on BEFORE he cancels service, yeah, he will have a very shorty time frame where it might work.. But don't count on it lasting long.

I just noticed something.. You said you had switched before? How often do you switch? Is it something you do regularly because of certain shows or programing? If so, why not just suspend you account if you know your going to be switching back again in a bit.

No, I'm not one of those 2yrs and switch people.

I started with Dishnetwork back in 1994 and switched to DirecTV about 18 months ago. Only reason I switched was because I bought an HDTV and to upgrade with Dishnetwork was going to cost me $300 for the new box, while switching cost me zero. Dish has since been calling about every other month to get me back. Even offering to help offset the cancellation fee from DTV.

On top of all this is the fact that my wife HATES the direcTV DVRs. We have had several shows not record (straight to the "Delete?" screen), 2 boxes crater, and they are slower than Christmas.

I was affraid we'd lose it all. My old Dish SD DVRs still work to this day, wish the DTV boxes would as well. I planned on getting new service hooked up on Thursday and waiting to disconnect the DTV service on Tuesday, but the satellite connection will be lost since I do not intend to have 4 coax cables running to each TV.

I dont believe you can "keep" those HR units anyway so its really a moot point. I doubt that if you got them for free, that you own them. They need to be sent back to D*.

Unless the OP paid ~ $749 for the HR21 to own the unit, yeah, it will have to be shipped back upon account cancellation.

That hasnt been my experience.

Within 5 minutes of turning off a premium channel or having a free 3/6 month period end, trying to watch any of the content from those channels says "searching for authorized content" and shows nothing.

From the OP, I had no trouble watching content from our SD directv dvr's after they were disconnected. Although I unhooked them from the sat and phones before having them deactivated and they havent been hooked up since...we still watch some movies on an old SD directivo thats in our spare room that hasnt been hooked up for more than six months.

No idea what you're talking about there. I just finally watched 300 I had recorded off HBO (I think it was HBO) about 6 months ago and I haven't had any premium movie channel since February. No troubles at all. Still have a couple movies saved that I recorded off Starz about a year ago. Again, no troubles playing.

We had the premium package when we first signed up. A few months later I changed the package. By the time I got off the phone with directv changing to the choice plus dvr HD package and went over to the tv, none of the shows or movies from the premium channels would play. They all gave me "searching for authorized content". After I had problems with the install and early operations, directv gave me starz/encore free for three months and HBO/showtime free for six months. At three months and 5 seconds, all the starz/encore content would give me the same 'searching for authorized content' when I tried to view it.

Thats all I can tell ya.

It made some sense to me. Otherwise people would sign up for the premium channels for a month, fill a 1tb disk up with everything thats on, and then turn them back off for six months while they watched it.

Hmm, our free six months of HBO expires next month. My son has a handful of movies we have from HBOF that he likes to watch over and over (and over and over). My wife was planning on buying the dvd's when the free period is over.

We'll see if it does it again.

There's a difference between canceling a premium service and canceling service altogether. If you do not have service at all you will not be able to watch anything saved on the DVR.
