The Economy finally got to me. With rising costs for pretty much everything across the board, I decided to give Dish the boot. I had a Vip622 for the last 3 years, Locals, AT250 with HD, Platinum free for 3 months ( I originaly had the older 20 a month Hd pack but after they dropped Voom I couldn't see paying for the Platinum upgrade so went to gold), and the home protection plan. That was costing me around $82-$83 a month.
The service I switched to Is running alot of specials that offer discounts over the course of the year and no contracts. For a 200 channel pack with HD and 2 Hd ready receivers, one of which is a DVR, I pay $40 for the first month, then $50 for 5 months, then $60 for 6 months settling at $70 after a year. Not much of a difference in the end but it gives me a new pricing platform to add to for future additions and still keeps me at or under what I currently pay.
Dish offered me nothing to stay, even though I asked. I've never made a late payment, I wasn't a cash cow via ppv or movie channels, but 9 years should have goten some consideration. I was offered showtime or whatever for 1 cent. I could have gotten that at anytime already and haven't as I'm not interested in any premium movie channels and haven't been for years.
It's been a good run. i don't have any complaints about picture quality, reliability. I've been very fortunate and haven't had any outages that have been long or so annoying that I can remember them. I've only had 1 dud piece of hardware in 9 years ( a 622 that HDMI port that died after almost 2 years. For me it's about price.
The package I've got now doesn't have as many HD channels as Dish does, but then again, the ones that are missing I never watch anyway. Mostly sports and kids stuff. I am missing The Travel Channel HD, but I only record one show on it, and can make concessions for that.
Time will tell I suppose, and I can always come back. Thanks for all the interesting reading here, and the few times I've needed help you guys have always been fast and accurate. I'm mostly a lurker/reader.
My 622 goes dark today, when I cancelled they told me I own it, altho I never intended too. I certainly didn't purchase it up front, I also never had any obvious charges for purchasing it on my bill. I always paid exactly what I expected too, at any point during my last contract. Maybe something happened when they replaced it. I verified it 4 times over the weekend with different CSR's and they allsay it's mine. I'm gonna hang onto it for a month, maybe give a call in a week or two to check again. After that, it's going on Ebay. Probably the LNB's and mounts too. I also have a second set of remotes, full inbox cable package (I have the originals too, never used em) Splitters etc to unload. Should be a nice addition to the xmas budget. So I guess they did offer me something. If I quit, I get a paperwork glitch induced opportunity to make a couple hundred bux. Thanks DISH!
