The Economy finally got to me. With rising costs for pretty much everything across the board, I decided to give Dish the boot. I had a Vip622 for the last 3 years, Locals, AT250 with HD, Platinum free for 3 months ( I originaly had the older 20 a month Hd pack but after they dropped Voom I couldn't see paying for the Platinum upgrade so went to gold), and the home protection plan. That was costing me around $82-$83 a month.

The service I switched to Is running alot of specials that offer discounts over the course of the year and no contracts. For a 200 channel pack with HD and 2 Hd ready receivers, one of which is a DVR, I pay $40 for the first month, then $50 for 5 months, then $60 for 6 months settling at $70 after a year. Not much of a difference in the end but it gives me a new pricing platform to add to for future additions and still keeps me at or under what I currently pay.

Dish offered me nothing to stay, even though I asked. I've never made a late payment, I wasn't a cash cow via ppv or movie channels, but 9 years should have goten some consideration. I was offered showtime or whatever for 1 cent. I could have gotten that at anytime already and haven't as I'm not interested in any premium movie channels and haven't been for years.

It's been a good run. i don't have any complaints about picture quality, reliability. I've been very fortunate and haven't had any outages that have been long or so annoying that I can remember them. I've only had 1 dud piece of hardware in 9 years ( a 622 that HDMI port that died after almost 2 years. For me it's about price.

The package I've got now doesn't have as many HD channels as Dish does, but then again, the ones that are missing I never watch anyway. Mostly sports and kids stuff. I am missing The Travel Channel HD, but I only record one show on it, and can make concessions for that.

Time will tell I suppose, and I can always come back. Thanks for all the interesting reading here, and the few times I've needed help you guys have always been fast and accurate. I'm mostly a lurker/reader.

My 622 goes dark today, when I cancelled they told me I own it, altho I never intended too. I certainly didn't purchase it up front, I also never had any obvious charges for purchasing it on my bill. I always paid exactly what I expected too, at any point during my last contract. Maybe something happened when they replaced it. I verified it 4 times over the weekend with different CSR's and they allsay it's mine. I'm gonna hang onto it for a month, maybe give a call in a week or two to check again. After that, it's going on Ebay. Probably the LNB's and mounts too. I also have a second set of remotes, full inbox cable package (I have the originals too, never used em) Splitters etc to unload. Should be a nice addition to the xmas budget. So I guess they did offer me something. If I quit, I get a paperwork glitch induced opportunity to make a couple hundred bux. Thanks DISH! :)

I did the same thing with my dad's Directv service. After being a customer since the mid 90s, I cancelled it because the cost just kept getting higher and higher. They were paying $14 a month for the distant networks (since Directv has never added their local channels) and with HD and DVR the bill was now about $90 when it had been around $65-70 just a short time ago.

Cable offered a promotion that was too good to pass up that included HD channels, DVR, and Internet that has saved him at least $50 a month. Directv did offer not to charge for the second box or DVR service if he stayed but that was it.

I will say I'm glad to see that Dish is offering customers more programming packages that give them an affordable choice. Directv is not doing much of that with $29.99 being their lowest package and they won't allow you to have locals only service. Dish receivers also allow 2 rooms to view 2 separate programs, while Directv requires a additional receiver for $5 in each room to view a different show. Between the two services, I've always thought Dish was the way to go in today's economy.

This is the 2nd (or 3rd) post I've seen where someone was leaving Dish and they said Dish said to just keep the leased 622. Are these boxes already THAT obsolete?
No, they aren't obsolete at all.

Here's the thing.

The decision to not make TurboHD packages available to old customers who only have MPEG4 boxes is another stupid marketing move. It is very clear that the economy in the crapper and many are going to find it more desirable change providers mostly because of money issues. It would have been such a smart move at this time to prevent us from seeing posts like jkramer5's.

I recognize that those TurboHD packages are going to have to be repriced and reorganized at some point and may end up feeling like a trap to some. But the executive office at Dish/Echostar must be in a bunker with no windows on the real world. If your organization can't anticipate and adapt rapidly today, you will see its extinction.

JKramer, did you ask to be connected to the retention department?
Yeah I did, that's when I got the offer for the movie package stuff for a penny. I asked "is that all and got yes in answer. TBH when a 9yr customer has to ask that question in regards to being dissatisfied, that's an error on thier part.

As fas as turbo HD, that wouldn't have helped me at all. I don't want any of the channels in the platinum pack and I don't feel paying 10 bux a month for the gold is too much. I also don't care to have HD only yet. I'd miss some of the SD stuff.

It's more a matter of the other fees. Paying for local TV has always bugged me. So has having to pay for extended service in equipment I'm already paying a lease for. The DVR fee is another. Exactly what is that for. Pay for the privelidge to record tv when I already rent the box. Then in the end they give me the box anyway. Oh well. I did agree to all of these fees. But I didn't like em, and where I am it's either Dish or Direct. Or it was untill about a month ago, so I would have paid those either way for Sat from either company.

Any 2 of those fees being absorbed by E* would match about what I'm paying to the new provider. 9 that ain't gonna happen tho) BTW I'm not an E* hater at all (9yrs loyal customer) nor am I closed minded to returning if my current provider doesn't come thru with the promised missing features.

It's more a matter of service for me. The new provider is running in circles to provide great service to get customers. I fully expect that to deteriorate over time although the quality has remained high and actually gotten better for the other services I buy from them. The h ardware Dish gave me, especially the VIP622 was great. It replaced a media center system I had to pay for, build, maintain, pay for upgrades etc. and made life much easier. My new unit isn't as good. Not yet anyway. But the customer service has always been fair at best and many times just plain bad. In all my calls to the new provider I haven't been sent to an overseas call center yet, not for any of the services I get from them. I like that.

Lol it's a sad day. I just removed my "Dish" activity from my Harmony 880 remote. Good bye old friend. Sniff.

Oh and about the "Leased 622". The didn't tell me to keep one I lease. It actually shows up as "Owned" in my account. Again, I never bought it. I've never bought a reciever from any tv provider and never would. I'm certain I never paid for it tho. I watch my bills closely.

Only thing I can figure is either when they activated the replacement for the broken one the CRS goofed, or the company that installed it in the first place made an error on the paperwork or something.

I wouldn't refer to the VIP622 as outdated either. I haven't seen anything that comes close to it. AFAIK the 722 is just more hard drive space. For me that was never an issue. I don't archive anything and it never came close to getting full. We record, watch, delete around here. On a bad day there's maybe 10-12 recordings on the drive, usually 3-5.

While I do understand the difficulty of giving up some cable SD channels with the TurboHD package (locals SD are included), wouldn't an offer from retention like this one have made the choice a little harder (ignoring the installation related one-time credits):

Nope. That gives me less than what I get now and another 2 yr commitment plus I have to pay for them to fix thier equipment after 9 months. Unless were talking wayy in the future when most stuff is in HD, turbo packs are just a snore to me. So are stretch-o-vision HD channels, and HD channels with mostly SD content.

Well I can relate to everything you say. Good luck with the new provider. I assume it isn't Comcast.
