DIRECTV CONUS Transponder/Channel Maps - Data 10/4/08

The attachments to this post are for CONUS Transponders only.

Post #2 provides the attachments for Local-Into-Local (LIL) transponders.

Attached are three PDF documents covering DIRECTV Satellites at the 95, 99, 101, 103, 110 and 119 West positions:
  1. A listing by Satellite and Transponder, showing assigned Channels
  2. A listing by Channel, showing the source Satellite and Transponder
  3. A listing by channel Name, showing the source Satellite and Transponder
A Transponder and Network Number reference sheet is provided in post #3. That sheet applies to both the CONUS and LIL listings.

All documents are fully unprotected so you may copy and use the data as you wish.

EDIT 11/11/08: CONUS Data Maps have been removed from this post. Please use the most current CONUS Data Map, posted today, 11/11/08.

DIRECTV LIL Transponder/Channel Maps - Data 9/13/08

Please be forgiving. This is a work in progress with a massive amount of data.

The attachments to this post are for LIL (Local-Into-Local) Transponders only.

The previous post provides the attachments for CONUS (CONtinental US) transponders.

Attached are two PDF documents covering DIRECTV Satellites at the 99, 101, 103 and West positions:
  1. A listing by Satellite and Transponder, showing assigned Channels
  2. A listing by Channel, showing the source Satellite and Transponder
IMPORTANT:
The satellite entry for these LIL channels is shown as <lookup> because while the Network Number and TPN are displayed for these channels, you will need to do an online lookup (at lyngsat.com, for instance) to determine which satellite carries this channel.

There are 219 LIL Networks, (all Networks of number 512 and above) comprising 6,628 line entries. I did not want to delay providing this information until an automated interface is in place to update the network-to-satellite-name relationship.
A Transponder and Network Number reference sheet will be provided in post #3. That sheet applies to both the CONUS and LIL listings.

All documents are fully unprotected so you may copy and use the data as you wish.

The satellites at the 72, 95, 110 and 119 slots are not included at this time.

Please remember this is data from 9/13/08: there have been multiple changes in these last ten days.

EDIT 11/11/08: CONUS Data Maps have been removed from this post. Please use the most current CONUS Data Map, posted 11/6/08.

Attached is the 'decoder' to show the relationships of the Network Number to Satellites and the Satellite Transponders.

EDIT 11/11/08: The 'decoder' has been removed from this post. Please use the most current 'decoder' , posted today, 11/6/08.

Wow, a lot of data. Thanks for your effort. I don't understand why I'm the first to ask a question (I'm sometimes dumb, but not usually that dumb).

The conus tpn numbers agree with what I expected (1-14 on D10 and D11). But I'm lost on the LIL tables. I was expecting to find the 7 Los Angeles channels on 2 transponders on D10 (I was once told tpn 20 and 21). But the table shows the 7 LA channels all on Network 617, tpns 3, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14. How do I translate from the network/tpn in the LIL table to the satellite tpn?

Heh, must be a special day, cuz I have the same question. One of my locals is acting bat-crappy and I'm trying to narrow down what xponder it's on so I can check the levels.

This is just a subset of the full blown data in the first two posts.

This attachment is just the CONUS (National) channels from the two newest DIRECTV satellites, DIRECTV-10 and DIRECTV-11.

This data is probably of the greatest interest to most folks.

The data is current as of 10/1/08.

EDIT 11/11/08: CONUS Data Maps have been removed from this post. Please use the most current CONUS Data Map, posted today, 11/11/08.

OK, I've looked at all of the above files and am confused.

I am in the Harrisburg/Lancaster, PA DMA. I found the following for my local DT stations from your data:

WGAL channel 8 net 587 Tp 59
WHP channel 21 net 587 Tp 5
WHTM channel 27 net 587 Tp 11
WPMT channel 43 net 587 Tp 48

I can tell since these are all "net 587" that they come from the same satellite, but each has a different transponder (59,5,11, and 48). How do I figure out which satellite (D10 I believe) and which 103 deg transponder each comes down to me on? Somehow I am missing something.

I also see subchannels for my local stations (ie, DT2) that D* does not carry. What do the subchannel listings in the charts mean?

Is it possible that net 587 is really OTA? According to tvfool, your stations are broadcasting on the following channels:

Code:
WGAL 58
WHP 4
WHTM 10
WPMT 47
The transponders reported on net 587 are all exactly one more than the OTA channel number they are broadcasting on.

I'm also confused. I'm in New York, and the channel to transponder map shows the following for WNBC:

WNBC 4 Net-587 <lookup> 31 nbc.ch
WNBC 4 Net-632 <lookup> 5

My 99s signals on TP 5 and 31 are 0 and n/a respectively. Am I misunderstanding the documents? TIA.

And updated the available HD bandwidth analysis earlier today:
So I have a question... If each transponder has about the same usable bandwidth as 7 OTA UHF/VHF stations (according to Tom in one of his posts here: http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?t=82295) then why are we limited to just 5 channels per transponder? I am assuming I am reading something wrong, but the way I read his post on D10/11 payload configurations, each transponder should be able to handle 7 channels at MPEG-2.... What am I reading wrong on that page?

Also, I am asking a lot, but has anyone done a space check like you have done for D10 and D11 for all the sats at 101, 110, and 95 and 119? I wonder how much space is available there? It is possible Directv can move some things coming from 101 to one of the other stas, like the gamechannels and some a few spanish channels I see listed there, and then free up a bunch more space for HD. There are still the legacy channels to yank down too, which will free up more space on those other sats for programing too... And It looks like there is still at least 3 MPEG-2 HD channels on 101... I have a feeling that there is more room across the entire fleet to add more HD than just on D10 and D11, and I see no reason why Directv won't put HD on 101, if they can clear up space by better utilizing other sats that have space as the Legacy HD channels get turned off...

That's good discovery, blind parsing APG especially LiL records wasn't final.

So, gct please change a name "LiL tpns" ## to "local ch" numbers with substracting 1.

There's a discovery here pointed out by Steve: when the channel name entry in the table is:
a. the four character channel name Wxxx for the east
b. the four character channel name Kxxx for the west
Then the DIRECTV entry in the 'TPN' field is a the
channel number incremented by 1.

Steve's entry "WNBC 4 Net-632 <lookup> 5" is such a placeholder entry. But for your sanity: a search for the channel NY4 (that same WNBC channel, in SD) shows it as channel 4, in Net 632 and on transponder 31.

The rest of the question still begs an answer: how do we map the actual TPN to the signal strength display on your receiver? For the old 110W sat, for example, we have known that actual TPN28 is mapped to virtual TPN8, actual TPN30 to virtual TPN10 and actual TPN32 to virtual TPN12. We have some relationships still waiting to be discovered.

gct, can you answer my question from above? I am confused when I look at your file data for the Harrisburg/Lancaster, PA DMA.
