Dude, isn't Fresno flat? You should have no trouble pulling the OTA signals. Fresno is a cool DMA, it has (I believe) the only UHF O&O station of the original big three networks anywhere in the country. ABC 30. :)

OTA isn't always reliable. We shouldn't have to attach rabit ears, etc. to recieve these channels...this isn't the 60's. Cable has managed to carry all their HD locals ... and Dish needs to kick it up a notch or it's going to start losing subscribers.
Get an antenna, the PQ is better OTA than ANY satellite.

What does the 1960s have to do with anything?

OTA is the best way to get locals (even before HD) if you can get a good signal where you are located. Cable nor satellite has ever been as clear as solid OTA even before HD.

For people who cannot get OTA, I sympathize... but if you can get OTA you should. It is much better TV for the small effort.

On a side-bar... why do we have to wear clothes? That is so 1800s! :)

FYI - KEYE in Austin is also a CBS O&O and is on channel 42.

Analog ota is obsolete but digital ota isn't. I think its cool to be able to get pristine HD with rabbit ears. Another perk with OTA is you don't have to pay for locals.

Well, you do if you want the 622 to have guide data for your OTA digital locals.
Is there an easy place to check what is and what isn't available OTA HD?
I looked at attennaweb.org but i didn't really understand what i was looking at..
Another benefit with OTA is if you're using a vip622 you can record 2 satellite shows, plus 1 OTA simulatenously... which comes in quite handy sometimes! I live in LA and have HD Locals.

And yes OTA quality is better, though I think the difference is not too big.

I'm actually going to try to install an outdoor antenna this weekend so I can pick up OTA channels better... it's definitely worth the effort!

You could Enter the Required Info at the following site, theyll get back with you with some info:

I've got my Antenna now - so I get my Local HDs which I am thrilled about. My signal varies from 99 for Fox and some others, down to about 68 for CBS. I guess that is just something that I will have to live with. Especially considering I am just using an internal antenna.

Couple of questions, I have an HD tuner in my TV and obviously a tuner in the ViP 622. I am running the antenna through my Dish box so I can tape three things at once - nice touch Dish, is it going to make any difference in my signal whether i put it through the dish box or direct to the TV? I can't think of anyreason because it's a digital signal not like analog where you could boost the singal - but thought I would ask?

What do people consider a good signal that won't breakup. 80+?

Also is there anything stopping me putting a switch on the Antenna and plugging into both Dish box and the TV, and then taping three things on the Dish box, while watching something else OTA on the TV through the direct feed from the Antenna?? I know that is greedy, but then again they did make a new Rocky movie, and I'm not that greedy or desperate.

Besides KEYE/42 in Austin, you've got:

WWJ/62/Detroit (CBS)
KNSD/39/San Diego (NBC)
WVIT/30/Hartford (NBC)

NBC owned (until recently) WNCN/17/Greensboro, NC.
