i can finally get my local channels where i live. I get them no problem with my HD receiver in the living room, but i cannot get them on y R15 DVR in the bedroom. I called DTV and they tried a few things like restarting the receiver, changing the cables around etc and they cant get them to work, NOW they want me to pay 80 bucks for a "tech" to come out and look at my dish. I JUST got a brand new dish, 3 LB's and it works in the living room. I tried to do the automatic installation on my r15 since i now have a different dish, and i still cant access the channels

any ideas, i am not paying 80 bucks to have it "looked at"

Thanks all
Derek

I believe you have the 5 LNB dish (probably Slimline), correct?

I don't know for sure but I believe you may be in a area that the locals are MPEG4 and your R15 will not be able to receive them. If that is the case than you would either need to try to get DIRECTV to upgraded your R15 to a R22 (new SD DVR) which can receive the the new SAT's or upgrade it to a HD HD DVR.

Hopefully someone will know for sure if your SD locals are MPEG4 or not.

Since you do have a 3 LNB dish and you are receiving them on your HD receiver than my thought is not the problem because you would not be receiving them on your HD receiver either. What HD receiver do you have?

Some markets SD locals are MPEG4 and they need a 5 LNB dish, HR20/HR21/H20/H21/H23/R22 receiver to receive them but that is not the case for you.

well i only see 3 LNBs on there but i do have the HR21 HD reciever... i get the locals there fine. The R15 does not even show it on the guide
I know there will be some SD locals moved to SAT 119 but I don't know if that is started yet.

Did you select 3 LNB dish during SAT setup on the R15? If not try that and see if they are added.

If this is Bangor, ME locals then they ARE MPEG-4 (from the 99 satellite) and so the dish must be a slimline 5-lnb.
dvigue - the slimline looks as if it only has three LNBs but one of the LNB covers actually has three LNBs inside. Check your HR21 - you will probably find it is set to 5-lnb.
As Michael says, this means there are only certain receivers/DVRs that can recive the locals, and the R15 is not one of them.
DirecTV has recently released an SD DVR that can receive MPEG-4, the R22, and you would need one of these not an R15 if you want to receive your SD locals.

The 5-LNB dish looks like it has 3-LNB's, and has the word "Slimline" stenciled on it's face. It is oval shaped. Given you have an HR21, you almost certainly have a 5-LNB dish.

A very few markets have mpeg4 SD channels which require an R22 SD DVR. If you are in one of those, your R15 should be replaced for free with an R22. You should not have to pay for a service call if that is the case.

Do make sure you have your locals in both SD and HD on your HR21 (the HD version will have the channel number and the call letters of the station, for example 5 KING, while the SD version will have the channel number and a 2 letter city abbreviation such as 5 SE5). You might need to set your HR21 to not hide SD locals in order to see those entries.

One thing you can do is to re-send the programming authorization for your R15. Go on-line, log into your account (or set one up if you haven't). Then go to troubleshooting and select one of the 700-series error codes and you will get an option to re-send programming authorization. See if that helps.

After reading this thread, I can't believe how uneducated the DTV CSR's are if indeed this poor new user isn't getting his locals on his R15 because they are being transmitted in MPEG4.

How did he get an R15 in the first place since "locals are included in all packages"?

Why are these CSR's having him reset the receiver and perform other futile tasks?

Why are they threatening him with a service call charge for their stupidity?

All I can say is I'm glad he found DBSTALK.COM...

He is in a very unusual market. He just got his locals, for the very first time, HD and SD. SD MPG4 is only in a VERY few morkets, not surprised at all that a CSR had no idea.

I do believe the OP had it previous to the ka.ku upgrade

Because that is what their computer tells them to do.

They aren't threatening him at all. Hold your horses.

Just to clarify a bit, the locals in Bangor are MPEG4, but they are SD only.

Bangor does not have any HD locals at this time.
true. i wonder when they will offer it?

i emailed DTV and told them I am so done with paying all these equipment upgrade costs and if i could not get a new "leased" receiver at no cost o am going to Dish or cable. I have really had it with all these fees. im going to look into dish today i think.

They emailed back and said that i can look at the "offers" on the receivers page. they could give a crap. i think i might be done.

i did change the r15 to a 5lnb dish, and i checked this morning, and they are still on listed in my guide.

No idea when Bangor will get HD locals.

You won't be able to receive locals on your R15. You will need to get an R22 (the MPEG4 SD DVR) and they should provide it at no-cost to you. They should have done this when they upgraded your dish.

I'd get in touch with the retention dept. at this point. I hate to hear about all your trouble they can make it right. Also there is ' case management' and 'OOP'.

Dish has similar fees so beware.
