local channels ?

A guy I work with told me this morning that a DTV installer was at his house yesterday and told him that after January 1 2009 he would lose his local channels on his current dish which is a single lnb for SD. I thought that this losing locals only aplies to those who have ota analog? So does someone know for sure if DTV will pull the plug on your local SD. HD locals is not offered in our area yet.

If his equipment is old enough that it's not compatible with the new sattelites, and DTV moves those channels to one of the newer birds, he won't get them any more without getting his dish and receiver updated.
He will not lose them. The installer does not know what he is talking about! :nono:
Rule #2 here at DBSTalk: don't believe everything you hear from installers.

(Rule #1 is don't believe everything you hear from CSRs. :p )
The funny thing is he had 4 recievers installed 3 weeks ago and this week he bought an HDTV. He is going to have to get a new reciever and dish to get any HD channels. I told him he should have bought the tv first. I would say even if you don't have a HDTV yet go ahead and get the slimline dish at least in the future you are set.
While DirecTV may not yet carry HD locals in your area, they may before 2009. Whether they carry the HD locals or not, they surely would have made arrangements to take the HD signal and downconvert it to SD in place of the current signal. They surely couldn't afford to lose entire DMA's worth of customers that had not yet upgraded to HD.

And only 50% of what you read.
If he's upgrading to the new dish and an HD receiver, he shouldn't have issues with his SD locals unless DTV moves them to a sattelite that his current receivers don't understand how to decode.
If he's getting a new TV, it will have the ATSC tuner, and he can just pull locals "off the air" with an antenna... The actual antenna will depend on the proximity to the antenna farm... http://www.antennaweb.org/ can help with that... If he wants to record (OTA) locals on the DVR, then that's another story alltogther... And will depend on which receiver one has.
Note he is talking about getting his locals "on his current dish which is a single lnb for SD". It's not clear if this is his ONLY dish, or a separate one he has for his locals. It may well be a separate dish pointed at one of the 'temporary' additional satellites, like the one I currently get my locals from at 72.5°, and would indicate these are moving to one of the locations picked up with a current Slimline or equivalent. No surprise there.
