Local NBC Affiliate--Just Goofy HD/SD Slip?

So, the family and I are watching Monday night's prime-time Olympics coverage on NBC last night. (Yay for DVRs!) The HD picture is just glorious! Everyone is really enjoying it. Suddenly, in the middle of some gymnast's routine, our local NBC affiliate, KFOR (OKC), throws a switch, screen goes black, and the next thing we know, we're seeing the Olympics in ugly, pillar-boxed SD. A second or two later, KFOR throws up a huge logo , taking up most of the bottom quarter of the screen! (Go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KFOR-TV if you want to see it--it's at the top right of the page.) Another few seconds go by, and they remove the logo, and a second after that, the screen goes black again, and then switches back to HD.

Apparently, they had to switch to SD to show their logo graphic. As they still broadcast their news in 4:3, I guess it isn't too surprising. I just question why they needed to destroy the beautiful HD presentation of the Olympics for few seconds to put up another logo. They already had an omni-present translucent "4"-bug in the upper right-hand corner of the screen! Granted, it isn't a 4:3-safe bug...

I only have seen this happen once. But I wonder why it happened at all? Did a board-op get in trouble, I wonder? :eek2: Anybody else see this kind of weirdness from their local?

My guess is that they had some problems with the HD feed and switched to the SD feed to continue programming. They switched back when they fixed the problem.
I live near Baltimore and their NBC affiliate shows the lotto drawing every night and later runs the numbers across the bottom of the screen. They have to switch to SD to do the split screen for the drawing and later they do it again to do the crawl at the bottom of the screen. It switches back to HD after it's done. This happens EVERY night during prime time programming!! Soooo annoying.
Was it at or near the top of the hour? If so, it's just routine station identification.

It appears that the affiliate can't run the logo in HD so to follow FCC rules they switch to SD, run the ID, then switch back.

When I lived in Missouri, sometimes the ABC affiliate wouldn't switch back after running the logo. At least you only lost HD for a few seconds...

However, if the logo referenced is really the logo they put onscreen, it is not a legal ID anyway because of no city of license.
Happens more often then you'd think with local stations. You'd think after 10 years they'd have figured this out but yea, it happens. I love it that many stations still have a guy sitting there to "flip the switch" and sometimes forgets to put it back to HD after a local SD commercial break. Classic.

I don't think it was anything routine. I think it was just a one-time (hopefully) mistake. I've been watching NBC's prime time coverage of the Olympics every night since, and I haven't seen it happen again.
