Local Stations

I live in Charlottesville Virginia and DirectV does not offer our local stations (DishTV does) and therefore they provide us with the Richmond Virginia local stations. I know that this is the only local staions they will provide but neglecting that fact is it physically possible to get the local stations for Cleveland Ohio (Bowns fan). Can my dish (3 LNB - no HD) see and get a signal from the satellite for Cleveland?

No. That signal is on a spot beam that isn't beamed to your area. Also, it is a violation of FCC rules to give you locals from another area if you have locals available in your area. This rule was made to protect the local station and its advertisers, who would be losing ad views to other areas if people could get "distant" locals.
And yet we find that they're importing Richmond LIL into the OP's locale.

I'm assuming that the OP's locals should be coming from Harrisonburg, VA.
I'm surprised they gave you Richmond. I just went thru the local channel qualifier on D*s website and it said I was SOL.
Dish Network has been known to provide locals in an area where it is not allowed and they have been fined for this practice.

According to Directv's web site, they do not offer any locals in Charlottesville. Of course, mistakes happen.
When I talk with DirectV they tell me that my local stations are Richmond. I tell them that Charlottesville has their own local station but they say the FCC will not allow them to provide them. I spoke with one of the Charlottesville station managers and he said that DirectV negotiated with them back a while ago and then stopped all negotiaions (about 2 years ago).

PS: On other forums that I posted on, I am able to check a box to get an email when there is a reply to my issue. Does that capability exist on this forum?

Yes. At the top of the thread there's a Thread Tools menu. In there is where you can subscribe to the thread.

dt 47 is moving back to analog position of channel 43 as well fox wpmt43.2 used to be the tube
dt 58 wgal back to the original channel assignment nbc 8.2 nbc weather plu
dt 23cw15 is moving to 15 wlyh
d 30/49 ind redlion york harrisburg religion /ind wgcb
d37/33 witf hd has a different thansd channel

the point is dtv transistion is going to be a bit of a mess though 4 comcast too
ie anything past channel13 customers will need a digital and/or hdtv box to access cable channel in digtall 3 digit formatt unless you have digital cable/hd decoder built in all channels will come up but ppv technology for ordering events needs the on demand box scuttle butt has it that supposedly comcast is phasing out the non dvr boxes on or before feb 17th 2009
abc 27 whtm goes to 10 if the fcc doesnt move it back
See less See more
oop s i goofed but on topic d may have harrisburg in hd already

I have gotten the same run around for all 4 of my locals that D* does not offer but Dish Net does. I called and spoke with all 4 stations presidents and was told that they offered the channels for free to D* just to get them to air them but D* has not made any real attempts to get it done. This is for the Joplin/Pittsburg 148 DMA.

Huh? they shouldn't offer you Richmond Locals but Harrisonburg.

If you go another five entries down the DMA list, you'll find that Charlottesville has its own DMA (#183). I made a very similar mistake.

I suspect that this may be another one of those situations like Mankato.

Apparently Charlottesville has CBS, NBC and PBS.

Harrisonburg has only ABC, PBS and an independent christian station.

In order to get Fox, they had to SV Richmond and apparently the locals didn't object.
I live in Charlottesville and, although I would love to get the Richmond stations, I am told that I am SOL by D*. I can get all of the Charlottesville stations OTA though, but only PBS and NBC are HD. Harsh, we do have ABC and FOX as well. They and CBS are broadcast digitally but only in SD. Seems that the outfit that owns all three doesn't have the frequency allocation from the FCC to send out both their analog signal and a digital HD signal for all three stations. Hopefully this will change in Feb. '09 when they cut their analog signal. Weird but true.
I am confused by what you are saying. I get all of the Richmond locals and I am in Charlottesville (actually Barboursville). As far as the true Charlottesville station I get them all OTA. I get them both digital and analog. I get 16, 19, 27 & 29 (23 does not come in).
