I had thought Columbus Ohio was not available in HD because whenever I went to the web site it said hd not available in my area. I was PM'd by someone on the board and told that columbus is carried in hd. I contacted Directv and this was the response I received:

Thanks for asking about HD programming. I know that
HD programming is important to you and DIRECTV is
committed to offering the best possible HD
experience to you. In recent months, we have
launched the first two of four satellites that will
allow us to greatly expand our HD local channel
offerings.

The two new satellites have allowed us to begin
offering HD local channels in several cities, with
many more to come later this year. I'm sorry, but at
this time, HD locals is not available in your area.
HD local channels will reach most homes in Columbus
OH market when available, but not homes in your zip
code. That is because the satellite beam will not
cover your area.

We will deliver the HD local channels to the
Columbus OH area via a satellite spot beam (when
available), that covers the areas immediately around
the city like a spotlight. In zip codes near the
outer edges of a "spot beam," we aren't able to
offer local channels because there is a possibility
that another satellite spot beam will overlap and
cause interference. As a result, even though you do
live within the Columbus OH TV market as designated
by Nielsen Media, you live in a zip code where we
are not able to offer local HD channels. We're sorry
for any inconvenience.

Thanks again for writing and stay tuned to
DIRECTV.com for the latest news and updates about
our services.

I dont understand how I can receive the regular channels but I am not allowed to receive them in HD. It would seem to me that the regular channels would cause the same problems that this is refrencing but to be honest Im not as educated in this matter as I would like to be.

Is there anything else I can do?? The only local channel is 40 miles away and hard to get via antenna and doesnt broadcast hd anyway.

Moving is not an option. Cable in the area was adelphia and taken over by time warner but they have to upgrade the systems because hd again not offered and it will be awhile. My zip code is 43756.

Any reasonable suggestions would be appreciated.

The way I understand it is that the footprint for the SD locals is larger than that for the HD locals, so some on the outer areas of the SD may not be able to receive the HD signal. Not directly affected, so I haven't paid a lot of attention, but that is my impression from what I have read here.

click on the link on my earlier response and enter you zip, then read the entire response. I'm talking about the second part that refers to HD! The first part you can't because you already can get SD, but HD you can't because of signal quality for ABC and FOX are not strong enough for OTA, so your eligible for those two networks via DNS.

I am struggling now to get DNS HD channels.

Even tho the D* website says I am eligible with no qualifiers, I can either not get thru to Special Services (the department that handles this,) or their system is down.

They told me they would call me back within 48 hours. That was three days ago.
