already posted in the HDDVR forum, looking for help from fellow CEers

Today, I had to have my HR20 replaced and was given an HR21.

When the technician left, all the shows recorded to my External eSata drive were visible (but not playable).

After an 0-2-4-6-8 reset, I tried to view the recordings, but everything is gone.
The HR21 seems to be properly connected (it displayed the shows previously).

Is this a normal problem? Does anyone have a solution (in case those recordings ARE still on the drive)?

As I understand an external eSATA drive and the content on it are only accessible to the HD DVR that recorded the content.
Ahhh...that would explain it. But does anyone know if they've been deleted? Or are just inaccessible?

I'd hate to have half a drive filled with non-viewable garbage.

Correctamundo.

If you lost the original dvr, all your recordings made with it on the esata are now garbage.

If you can still see them you should delete them. if not they are gone already

What I don't understand is why DTV didn't include a re-marry command in the HR series with external drives. It's not like devices blowing up is an unheard of event, and they can (although really really don't like to) re-marry access cards, so why they didn't include a basic re-auth in the external drive spec is beyond me...

Although they CAN remarry an old card to a new receiver, trying to get the access card department to do it can be an uphill battle because they really don't WANT to do it.

As for remarrying a hard drive, I can understand their hesitation.

1) They absolutely refuse to create a way for you to create a hard drive full of "Premiere Package" programs and give it to your friend who just has a "Basic Package" ... which would be the equivelant of "sharing a subscription".

2) The logistics of "creating a way", and moreso "IMPLEMENTING AND CONTROLING" it, would become a nightmare.

3) Once enough of the (smart) people do it repeated times, they'd figure out how to reverse engineer the whole process, which would (I'm sure) become public knowledge ... and if you know anything about DirecTV's past history, their signal integrity department takes this topic very seriously!!!

And just to put a close to this thread, it turns out BreezeCJ has a Seagate Freeagent Pro which does not work with HR21's (known issue).

He's now looking for a new Esata drive.

I don't buy any of the above reasons. It would be very easy to implement a secure system that would marry the external drive to your account and not just a specific unit. That way you could move the hard drive to any DVR in your home (i.e. on your account) but not loan it to your friend because their DVR is NOT on your account. I haven't kept up with the latest Dish Network stuff but IIRC Dish marries the external hard drive to your account as described above. The real answer is that Directv could easily do it if they wanted to, but have chosen not to for some reason(s) that they are not disclosing.

And Dish is one of the most highly hacked providers on the market.
I wouldn't be surprised if they have.

EASILY do it?
Ok, if that's what you want to believe.
:sure:
And notice I'm not saying they CAN'T do it.
I'm saying it might be a large headache they don't want to address just yet.
Maybe they are too busy working on some other things first.
