MASN to Launch Full-Time HD Channel

By MASN Staff on September 16, 2008 11:36 AM | Permalink
MASN, the local leader in live sports entertainment, will launch a full-time HD channel in March of 2009 and will more than double the number of HD telecasts of Nationals and Orioles games.

Expanding on MASN's successful first season utilizing high definition technology, the network will air up to 200 Major League Baseball games in HD in 2009, giving sports fans an HD game every night of the season. Additionally, the channel will carry Ravens preseason games, selected NCAA Division I football, basketball, and lacrosse games, and ESPN News in HD.

DIRECTV on the list to carry the full time HD channel.

Many of MASN's distributors will carry the full time HD channel, including Comcast, DirecTV, Cox, and RCN.

They should ALL be carried in HD.

It would be nice but MASN often carries two games at the same time. They would need a more complicated distribution system and would need space on systems. And this market already has a full time Comcast Sportsnet in HD. That is pushing the HD content for this market. This is not New York.

They will be up to about 2/3 of the baseball games and a lot more of everything else. This is a big step and MASN is to be congratulated.
Remember, this station is (largely) owned by Mr. Peter Angelos.

Is the SD feed even carried by Comcast or Cox in the DC area yet?
Well nice to know DirecTV wil definitely have new HD by March 2009........

Who just happens to be one of the CHEAPEST SOB's in sports....I am so glad that his team struggles to win. The O's and Nats were last two teams to get HD coverage in two of the nations' largest TV markets. So what sense does that make. Angelos blows.

Comcast has had the SD feed since they settled the lawsuit in April 2007. There is one dedicated channel and a shared channel for MASN2 (often with CSPAN). Comcast has put all the MASN HD programming on, usually on Mojo.

According to the MASN webpage, Cox in Virginia has pretty much the same setup.
Thank God !!!!!!!!

Another full-time RSN where the only people who can actually see the HD content live within that particular region. As far as HD programming is concerned, this announcement doesn't affect the vast majority of customers.

Full time RSN's, while nice for the people in the actual region, are pretty over-hyped as far as being on the total HD count.

Agreed, but for the 9,000 of us who watch MASN in the DC area, this is great news-the funny thing is that while the MASN SD picture quality is terrible, the HD picture is excellent.
Now if only they would do a local sports news program.

You can watch those channels as long as you subscribe to the particular leagues package, in this case, MLBEI.

Sarcasm noted but this announcement didn't come from DirecTV looking to inflate its HD numbers; it came from MASN and is being passed on here because MASN said they have an agreement with DirecTV.
Charlotte NC must be the sweet spot. We get MASN and MASN 2 plus Fox Sports South and SportsSouth. Yet we can go 2 weeks sometimes without any games in HD.

I can't understand why the Braves, Nats and Orioles can only show some games in HD. What, do they have to depend on visiting teams bringing their own HD cameras for them to borrow the feed from?
Now those Mets fans can see the Nationals beat them in HD ALL the time! Gotta love it!
While this is great news I was really hoping for all of the games to be in HD for the 2009 season. Oh well there is always 2010.
MASN doesn't always originate the broadcast feed so there are a lot of games where they are simply relaying the feed from another source. In that instance they have no control over the broadcast with respect to it being in HD. It's all a moot point to me anyway since I stopped watching MLB after the players threatened to go on strike again. It's a damn shame too because I used to be an avid baseball fan. The players cut their own throats once too often for my tastes and have lost a lifelong fan as a result. I couldn't tell you the last time I watched any baseball game, let alone my once beloved Orioles.

Ironically, my wife is good friends with Tom Davis's girlfriend (Bonnie) so I run into him from time to time at various social occasions she drags me to. Heck of a nice guy and bigger in person than you could possibly imagine. I'm probably the only person he comes in contact with that doesn't bend his ear about sports.:D

This is true for ESPNews and college sports but they are the producer of Nationals and Orioles broadcasts. They do not use other feeds.
Being in MASN's territory, I see this as good news. I wonder if they will have ALL HD on MASN2 (games only channel). I think MASN2 currently only does some games in HD.

Supposedly, one HD channel with overflow (MASN2, presumably) in SD. They are promising one HD game per night during baseball.
