Are any of the new receivers fast enough to keep me from switching to Dish? Reviews on new Hopper by HT Guys say it's very fast. I'm thinking retention might yield to my wish if I ask for newer/faster DVR or I go Dish. Been with D* since 96.

I did? That's what happens when you get old. Short term memory goes to hell. Sorry about that.

However, still no answer in either thread.
I answered you in the other thread.

As far as if they are "fast enough" to keep you from switching, that's up to you. I don't know what you'd call "fast enough". My DVRs aren't slow...

Being objective, if speed is your most important need, go to uVerse if available in your area.

If you like Directv for everything else other than speed, try to get HR24's and H25's and you will be very happy.

If you do decide to go to Dish make sure you bye a lot of Kleenex before you go because you will be crying for years. The so called Hopper has only 3 tuners the HR34 has 5.
You are not limited to one Hopper, lease on 2nd same $7 as a Joey - 6 tuners plus access to Prime Time Anytime.

The only thing fast about Uverse is channel changing. Everything else is slow... especially deleting recordings.

I offer you a very old cliché like me: the grass always looks greener on the other side of the fence. You have a lot of choices for media delivery. Try them all. You can always return to D*. Best wishes!

When I called to cancel DirecTv today (which happens at midnight tonight) they told me I could get a newer DVR for free and a $10/mo discount to stay. Of course, since their dish was sitting next to my garbage can and the Hopper was already hooked up, that was a no-go for me. If people were still loving the HR24 like when it first came out, I might have bit, but with BBC America and The Hub in HD, plus a DVR that works the way I expect one to, there is no way I'm going back now.

Is the Hopper much faster than your D* DVR? How much?

Let's put it this way, who is better looking Megan Fox or Betty White. My opinion is Megan Fox that's the difference between the Hopper and the HR24. I am really impressed with the speed of the Hopper and the additional basic HD. I really thought I would regret leaving Directv but they didn't want to come off of the $399.00 price for the HR34, $50.00 upgrade fee and $49.00 installation fee. It cost me $199.00 for the second Hopper so I have six tuners instead of five, more basic HD, fast equipment and the picture to me looks as good as Directv.

It may function the same for you, but calling the Hopper a 6 tuner box isn't exactly accurate. It is really 3. It can act like one during network prime time, but it's not using tuners for all of the recordings.

I only need to replace two independent D* dvrs, sometimes watched seperately by wife and me. Hopper and 1 joey will do that right?

Depends. Going from 2 dvrs to one Hopper and one joey, you go to three tuners, and if the Joey is being used for live TV, that uses a tuner.

If most of your recording is network primetime, its not as big of a deal as one tuner can get them all. But if you're recording other shows, some have gone with a 2 hopper setup.

While I haven't used it much yet, I would describe the Hopper as instant on button presses. Channel changes take about half the time they did on my HR22 - but that's the actual video. The button presses appear immediately on screen, telling me what it is doing. I have not had to hit a button twice even once. And this includes while recording 2 programs (5 if you count PrimeTime as four separate channels.). I could always tell when the HR22 was recording by its slow response and key-press misses.

HD picture quality is slightly lower, especially on my RSN. Not so bad as to be unwatchable, but I can easily see it. Note that I'm a perfectionist. It is vastly better than DVD, but not quite as Blu-Ray-like as DirecTV at its best can be. SD quality is much better. SD on DirecTV is unwatchable, on Dish it is good enough to watch, but you'd never confuse it for a DVD. Overall, HD on Dish is good enough for me. You might feel differently. I hear that Dish is working on transitioning their SD to MPEG4, which would free up more bandwidth. Who knows when/if that would happen.

The Dish iPad app is awesome compared to DirecTV's.

I have 5 HR24-500s all with 2 TB WD20EADS Drives in them and they are Fast and Channel Changing is a little Slow but I don't watch much Live TV so I could care less about that.

My Button Presses are Fast and Work as they should with no problems like my HR23-700s which are a lot Slower and sometimes results in the wrong channel number being selected.

I have not had to hit a Single Button Twice even once either. :)
