I asked some Dish customers about the performance of MPEG4. They are describing many of the issues that DirecTV customers are experiencing, so it's clearly not just DirecTV. I'm sure when Comcast and others introduce it, they will be working out bugs too. So I don't think quitting the service is going to help, because all carriers are having problems.

I had a cable HD-dvr. While the and interface were not as good and the features list was shorter, I did not have the mpeg4 pixelation problem for Washington DC's ABC 7 that I am getting on the directv mpeg4. I am happy I made the switch, but it is not fair to say that cable is having problems delivering HD and recording it. I never had a problem with my cable box, but I have been fortunate to not have any signficant problems with the HR20, occaisional pixelization of ABC, and the pixelization problems during fast forward during the last release were minor.

D* and E* are going through the pains now...cable isnt, but will have to eventually...

Cable has the bandwith, now, but as HD proliferates, they will not....Cable has a small window here (probably until summer 07 when D* has their new fleet up) to dominate HD....

I will suffer with D* for the next 6-10 months, as I truly believe by next fall the D* bandwagon will be getting full...that is, if they can indeed deliver every available HD channel with higher bitrates and lower/better compression...

Big ifs, but we shall see...
