Moving, and considering "other options"

I am a long time DTV customer, no longer under an agreement.

I have a simple setup, an HR20 for my 56" Samsung and an SD receiver for another TV we don't use very often.

I have had some issues with the HR20 drive in the past, but things are okay right now. Like many, the GUI is sluggish, but overall service is good.

Cost is my biggest issue. I can go to the other guys and save quite a bit of money over the next two years, and DTV isn't very interested in helping me solve that problem.

Now, I've bought a new house, and when we move, will need an additional HD receiver or DVR or whatever to drive an additional HD TV.

The DTV "Mover" solution has offered me a HR34 (which I really like), a simple HD receiver, and an SD receiver. Net cost (because I am such a "valued customer") $99 for the upgrade and $6 mo, all under a new 2 year agreement.

I think this is probably fair, and am tempted to agree. While the other guys have a cheaper "new customer" offer, their technology (Hopper and Joey) really doesn't compare with the 5 tuner HR34.

Am I thinking about this correctly? What should I watch out for here?

as an existing customer to get the HR34 for $99 is a steal. current customers have to pay $399 for it and only new customers get it for $99. The awesome thing about the HR34 is that it has 5 tuners (thats 5 shows at the same time!!!!!). If i were you, id go with it. its a pretty sweet deal an maybe see if you can get your sd bumped to hd when the tech comes. should be only an extra $49 i think. either way, your set up for the price is still great. asking for more free is a little greedy....lots of time and millions of dollars have gone into the SWiM system you will be getting installed in your new house which is far less invasive than things used to be and the new 34 is amazing!!!! in the future you can add new RVU compatible televisions which would take one of the lines from the HR34 (it can send out up to 3 lines to RVU compatible devices) with no set top box and a single line dvr. I hope this helps and can go into more detail if you have any more questions about it.

Sounds like a good deal to me. I would recommend trying to change it up a little though. I would recommend trying to get the HR34, a HD receiver, and keep your HR20(don't bother getting the SD receiver). This will allow you to record up to 7 shows at once, and watch them on any DirecTV receiver in your house (if you sign up for whole home DVR).

I would probably put the HR34 and HR20 on your two most used TVs and put the HD receiver on the seldom used one. That way you can still pause and rewind live TV on your most used TVs. Although if one of them is going in a bedroom some people prefer to use HD receivers in there so you don't have to worry about the hard drive/fan noise.

You can hook up an HD receiver/HD-DVR to a standard def TV, so don't worry about that.

I would also make sure they include the cinema connect kit (CCK) so you have access to On Demand. I think they pretty much always include that with the HR34 orders though.

See the thread "Leaving DirecTV... HELLO DIRECTV" I am moving to the ATL area next week and came across the same issue. Other providers have made me offers too.
The "movers connection" is no bargain because you get stuck with a new 2 year commitment and in your case a $99 fee with no programming discount.

I'd check out the alternative subscription TV services offered at your new location. Most likely, you will be able to get everything DirecTV has offered you for FREE plus a super-discount on the programming package for the first year.

If you don't like it, in 2 years DirecTV will beg you to come back AS A NEW CUSTOMER with all their super-duper give-away-the-store discounts on equipment and programming.

Oh, and before you move, take down your Slimline dish which you can sell for $$$ on eBay. ;)

You sure know how to make a nice deal sound bad. I keep wondering why you don't follow your own advice and switch to Dish. Then you can complain how they don't value customers after their new customer offer is over.

ThomasM is right tho. The OP shouldn't restrict himself to Satellite when looking at choices. He should check all choices in the the new area. They may have Fios or other cable that may be competatively priced and have what he wants. Plus many cable companies don't have lockup type commitments. So if he does try one and doesn't like it, he can move to something else easily.
Did DirecTV recently add the two-year commitment with the Mover's Connection? I recently cancelled DirecTV and it was within two years. I also "bought" an HR24 on Solid Signal last summer and didn't have to pay an EFT.
When considering the other guys, you need to ask yourself these questions:

- How many tuners per DVR do you really need? Five would be great, but three is more than you have today, plus you can record 6 things at once within the confines of PTAT.

- Do they have the HD content you want? I'm a lot happier with the additional basic HD I'm getting (BBCA, TCM, Epix, DIY, G4, H2, Hub, ID, Sportsman, NatGeo Wild, etc.).

- Do you like using your universal remote and RF remote at the same time? I could never do that with D*, but you can with the other guys. It even has a locate function so you can find a lost remote.

- Do you ever get frustrated with a slow responding DVR? The other guy's is blazing fast.

- Are music channels important? The other guys have SiriusXM like D* used to have.

- Do you want to watch your DVR from anywhere in the world, live? The other guys have nicely integrated sling functionality and online streaming of a lot of other content normally only found on HuluPlus.

- Do you want an inexpensive disc plan? The other guy's have unlimited blu-ray and games by mail included in their equivalent to the HD Extra Pack.

- How important is sports, Disney HD, premium HD, PPV selection? If those are priorities, best to stick with D*.

Considering all of the above, the other guys are the better choice in my case. There have been a lot D* defectors posting in the past week who are very pleased with their new service.

DirecTV subs value picture quality and a top notch product. Dish Network subs are happy to settle for less and a 2nd tier provider.

No, mover's connection still does not create a 2 year agreement. However, the original poster would be getting additional leased receivers added/activated on his account, that is why he would have to agree to a new 2 year commitment.

2 is fine for me. I have 7 tuners total and no recording conflicts.

I'd like to have BBC and Nat Geo Wild in HD, but it's no deal breaker for me. Dish didn't show all of the Reds games in HD last year. THAT'S a real problem for me.

Nope. Can't say that's ever come up for me.

My brother would tell you that my HR23 smokes his 722 on speed.

Yes, music is important to me. That's why I stream Rdio through my Roku. Listening to SiriusXM roll over the same shallow playlists all day is worthless to me.

I know more people that have Dish/Sling issues than don't.

More so than just Disney/ESPN, who will Dish get into a pissing match with next? It will happen again if history is an indicator.

The only reason I don't switch is that I like having multiple STAND ALONE DVR's with 2 tuners each and with DISH you pay through the nose for this. I also like DMX (Sonic Tap) a lot and listen many hours each day.

Eventually, with a couple more price increases and irritations like a $2 "regional sports" fee (I hate sports) and I will finally give up on DirecTV.

It's too bad since I've been with them for 12 years and up until the last couple years would never say anything bad about the service-but lately with the clunker software on the R22 (and HD DVR's) that removes favorite menu commands and takes 10 seconds to respond to a remote command and the constant nickel-and-dime price increases AND CHANNELS BEING REMOVED FROM EXISTING PACKAGES it probably won't be much longer.
