Moving in with friend setup

I am moving in with a friend while my house is being built. He already has DirecTV. There are 4 wires coming from his dish. Two go to his HR20, 1 to his bedroom and 1 to the bedroom I will be using for my HDTV.

Currently I have a DirecTV and a HR20 and would like to take my HR20 and use his dish and existing wire from his satellite. Is this possible or are there settings in my box where it won't work with his dish?

Can I use a splitter on the one wire from the satellite so i can have both tuners plugged in and working?

(Yes, I realize we will be paying for 2 separate DirecTV accounts.)

yes you can use his dish if he has the correct slimeline 5lnb dish.

no you can't just use a splitter, you would have to have a WB68 multiswitch (if he doesn't have any extra ports open at the dish) to make 2 new dedicated runs to your HR20.

i'm not sure if you need to contact DIRECTV and let them know what your doing.

Which he should since he already has an HR20 of his own.

Oop's miss that, my bad. :)
Not sure if this would work... but you may want to ask if you can suspend your account, and then move your HR20 over to his account for the time being... That way, it would just be an extra 4.99 on your friends bill...

Once again, this may not be possible... just a thought though... :)
What is the WB68 multiswitch doing that a 1 input / 2 output splitter isn't?

I definitely don't want to alter his house or buy extra equipment since I'm only staying there 5 months. My new house will be all centrally wired.

Is the best thing probably to roll with 1 tuner for 5 months?

I plan on notifying DirecTV :D

I thought of this...part of the issue is I have all the movie channels and NFL sunday ticket...and...we both have girlfriends so 1 prioritizer loaded with the shows of 4 people would make for many recording conflicts.

But, you both have HR20's. Why would you only have 1 prioritizer?

If you can't do that, I'd just live with one tuner for 5 months.

you can't just put any 2 way splitter in and expect it to work. if you do, there will be major problems with the HR20's seeing the signals. Major conflict.

each HR20 needs a dedicated coax run to the dish LNB.
the only option you have since you said your not buying any additional equipment. would be pull 1 coax off of his HR20 (tuner 2) and use a barrel connector (which is cheap) and run a coax from that room to the one your going to be putting yours at.

which all this would make his and yours receivers ability to record with only 1 show at a time.
The dish LNB has a multiswitch embedded within it. This multiswitch coordinates each tuners query for a signal from what ever transponder on which ever sat. If you need to use more than 4 (the embedded multiswitch has 4 outputs) tuners, you will need a external multiswitch.

Yes. Maybe see what the upgrade price for him would be.

I think that dtv may technically consider that to be satellite fraud. May not be, If it's not, they'll probably want 50 for transferring.
The Zinwell WB68 multiswitch allows for the current multiswitch (aka the LNB itself) to expand to 8 tuners. It sounds like you would need to put the NEW switch somewhere near where the 4 wires from the dish go. All 4 wires need to go into the zinwell. And then you'd need to run a 5th line from that switch to your new 5 month home location. For which you'll need to cut and reconnector-ize the cable to connect to the new switch and other necessary cabling accesories and guidelines (look into: "drip loop").

Otherwise, deal w/ just having 1 tuner for 5 months and don't let D* know anything till your ready to move into your new home. (unless you have other recvrs which you might want to take off the accnt temporarily to save you a few bucks).

Yeah, it does get a little iffy... I would never advocate satellite fraud... It was just a thought as a way to save him some money... I would just call DirecTV and explain to them exactly what's going on and see what can be done...

It isn't fraud. However, Directv will not transfer the receiver if it's active on another account (this includes an account that has suspended services). If you deactivate it from your account first, you risk having to pay an ETF (if you are still under contract and it is the only receiver on the account) and non-return fees. That's not counting the $20 that they will make you pay for the new access card.

Plus, you'd be taking double the risk because you would have to do it all over again in 5 months.

even if they could do it how would Dtv do the billing for two accounts at one address? Would they have to set it up like apt A & B?
