I am moving in about a month. Can I sign my wife up at the new house as a new customer (keeping my current account in the old house until after the install)? I would like to try to get the new customer deals. But I would like to keep my current boxes (can I hand the old boxes to the installer and have him put the new boxes in my old house?). Same 2 boxes (722 and 211).

Other option, I have ext. drives on both boxes. Will they work on the new boxes? If so I don't care if I keep my old boxes.

You can have your wife sign up a new account at the new house, but that will be a new account.

That means you can't transfer your receivers over (she will get new receivers) and you can't use your existing EHD recordings with her new account and receivers.

In order to keep your existing receivers and existing EHD recordings... you should partake in the "Dish Mover" that they should do for you for free to relocate to your new home.

You schedule the install, and all you have to do is make sure you take your receivers to the new home for the day of the install. That will keep your current account and receivers and external recordings intact.

Thanks. I guess my other option is to back up the ext data (discarc), reformat with new receivers, then copy the data back. I've done this with 2 HD's on the same receiver, just not sure if there's something in the data that wouldn't work on the new receiver.

If you want to keep your recordings you need to move and not sign up as a new customer. If you have failing equipment, you might be able to get it replaced during the move at no cost.

As others have noted... the EHD recordings are tied to your account, not your receiver... so there's no way to save them that would make them viewable on a new account.

The only way to keep them is to move officially, and the easiest way to do that is DishMover since Dish will do that for you for free.

So if I took a new ext hard drive, reformatted to a new 722 receiver, on a new account, and dragged the old DishArc files (bm,cat,tsp, and wtt) into the new DishArc folder, they would not show up on the new receiver?

If not I may just start from scratch with a new "wife's" account. They repeat stuff so often, it probably wouldn't take more than 3 months to get my archive back to where it is.

Correct... there is nothing you can do to make those files play on a different account. That's part of the encryption to protect so that customers can't give their recordings to anyone else. The channel providers would never have signed on for Dish to use that feature if you could move recordings to a new/different account because there would be no way to stop people from pirating the recordings.

I know that's NOT what you are trying to do... but it means the few legitimate situations are similarly restricted.
