MSNBC, CNBC, TWC, others - pixelating badly...anyone?

Having the strangest issues. The last few nights, the above mentioned stations have been badly pixelated w/ audio dropouts - unwatchable at times, like bad weather (weather is perfect though). It seems if I change the channel over and over, eventually I'll go back to it and it looks good and stays that way.

I restarted the box (HR20-700, menu restart) and MSNBC looked fine...until I changed channels and went back to it - pixelated now!

Not sure what transponder those channels are on, but the numbers look okay on all of them. Should I try pulling the plug? Will that do more than the menu restart?

Any opinions are greatly appreciated - thanks!!!

Check your signal readings on the 103(c) satellite. Trasponders 1 through 14 should have readings in the 80's and 90's. If you have some lower then 70 then good chance your dish needs to be realigned.

I just checked the readings - all in the 90s.

I then unplugged and restarted - picture was perfect for a while, then I changed channels, went back to CNBC and it was a mess again. Could this be my box somehow? It doesn't make sense since it's only a few channels that seem to be affected. Any ideas before I get them to send a tech out here who knows nothing (what I'm always afraid of)? Thanks.

You need to check both tuners on 103c, if you did not do that already. The symptoms you describe are typical of those where the signals on one tuner are OK and the other one is low.
Okay, interesting (and thanks for the instructions).

The transponder readings were a little lower on tuner two, most still in the 90s but some in the mid 80s. More curious though, I checked the signal strength meters for that sat and tuner 2 alternated between 94 and no signal at all. I noticed on other sats tuner 2 dropped out a few times as well.

What could be the issue? LNB? Alignment? It's been stable for a year or so, maybe more, so I'm confused as to what may have happened.

Again, thanks for all the help!

Oh, and in the meantime, how do you "force" one particular tuner on a channel. Seems like a silly question, but how do I get tuner 1 on the channel I want it on without restarting?

I had an issue on my original HR20-700 where one tuner was able to tune in MPEG-4 channels and on the other I just got a garbled mess, even though I was getting strong signals on both tuners. This sounds like what you are experiencing too.

You can force it to use a specific tuner by recording a show on the other tuner. First, tune to a channel that comes in clearly and record that channel. Then, tune to other HD channels and see if they come in clearly or not. If they all appear choppy then you have a bad tuner. You can also test the other way by recording on a bad channel and then tuning to other channels.

In my experience it was difficult to convince Technical Support that I had a bad tuner and they had to send out a tech to inspect it. They will often blame wiring or a misaligned dish and not the receiver itself. Good luck with your dealings.
Again, thanks for the response.

Strangely enough, this is happening on non-HD channels. Regular CNBC will be a mess, while the HD version is perfect. Weird.
most of the mpeg 4 hd chanell pixilate badly tonite at 8:10 and again at 9:15yesterday at 9:10
