We're really into music. My wife has over 40,000 tracks - all legally purchased - on her computer.

Tonight's "Bones" had a song by Antony and the Johnsons titled River of Sorrow (links to Amazon's mp3 download page for the song), a haunting element in the background of the show's emotional conclusion.

We've learned of so many artists in the last few years due to the music within shows and sometimes we're startled by what we discover we enjoy. The use of music in TV shows is being called "the new radio" in terms of giving artists broader exposure or any exposure at all. It's not a minor element because as noted in another thread, the music can cost as much as $200,000 per show for licensing fees.

Which raised the question in my mind: "Where's the thread for music in the TV Show Talk area?" So here's a start in case anyone shares our interest in the music in TV shows.

Cold Case is another show that uses a good mix of music both current and not so current.
For us old folks, Cold Case is the best show for music to go down memory lane as well as for current artists. The best site for music from Cold Case is http://www.have-dog.com/coldcase/ .

I also find myself searching down music within commercials a good bit... This site has come in handy for me many times.... www.adtunes.com

They also have good bit of info for music within TV shows too... http://adtunes.com/forums/index.php?act=ST&f=27&t=45325
Thanks for this link. Somehow I missed it.

I had never heard of AFI before they were featured in an epsiode of Smallville a couple of years ago, and now they're one of my favorite bands.
AFI is living proof that the worst of bands only need to hire a good producer to sound decent. I've got some early '90's nitro comps that they're on and i never could get into their sound.

once they signed to dreamworks, they had the funds needed to hire a good producer who could make them sound decent.

if you listen to anything before 'sing the sorrow', you probably won't know its the same band.

I dunno. While the music is often good, and its great exposure for the artist and the one into the music, it can degrade the show (applies to movies too) when the writers play music to fill in for emotion.

In some shows mainly the cheap ones on The CW, the use of it is abused.

MTV, of course, isn't music anymore but they do this but mainly with pop music in their reality shows, but its not the music that I have interest in.

Scrubs pretty much ends every show with an alternative song.

You're right. As with any production element, hamfisted use of music cannot replace good writing. And The CW has some of the worst abusers.

Grey's still has some of the best music in my opinion. Seems they always do a great job picking tracks for the situation going on.
i don't know if its the same with every show, but there are 3rd party services that pick the music for a lot of broadcasts. the shows music supervisor will tell the service what they need the song to be about, and what genre, and they'll find it. i have some friends who's music gets played on MTV, NBC, CBS, etc. . .and its all done through a 3rd party service. They handle all the royalties for them as well.

At an interstae fast food pit stop one of the actors from the old Ted Danson sit-com Becker sat at the table next to my wife and me. He smiled and agreed to answer a question about the show.

"Who is the amazing guitarist who does the little riffs for each scene change?"

"It's the producer's 15 year old son."

I'm sure he thought I was going to ask if he was really blind.

Definitely agreed there...I should have been more specific - most everything from Sing the Sorrow through today makes them one of my favorite bands. Don't care much at all for their older stuff.

i wasn't sure how big of a fan you are and didn't want to hurt your feelings by saying "they absolutely sucked", but now that i know you're in agreement, anything before 'sing the sorrow' SUCKS. :) but good for them that they were able to turn it around.

Becker was a great politically-INCORRECT sitcom.
