Greetings:

I have had my nightmare unit about 4 month's now. I have had too numerous problems to list. Briefly: loose timing needle; time needle sticks; during replay of recorded show screen goes black; Fast Rewind doesn't work most of the time; Bookmark doesn't work most of the time; the lag time from remote to actual change is awful...I have reset this thing more than I can count!

I finally broke down and called D*. I was told since I have done all the trouble shooting except formating that until I do this and the problems persist they won't send out a new unit.

Will formating cure any of these issues?

Many folks have reported much improved performance after reformatting their DVRs. It's worth a shot before getting a replacement.

It should also be noted that some people still had problems even after reformatting. Also... be sure to watch all your recorded shows you care about and jot down all your settings... they'll all go bye bye after reformatting.

Full Format Instruction Set #2:dbstalk 11/14/2006

Instructions for doing a FULL FORMAT (you lose all settings and recordings).
This will attempt to clean and prepare your hard drive:

1. Press the red reset button

2. You wll see the "Hello Welcome to DIRECTV" screen.

3. Then you will see the "Almost There" screen.

4. When you see the "Almost There" screen, on the HR20 front panel, PRESS and
HOLD DOWN (at the same time) the RECORD button and THE DOWN ARROW button, until
you see the "Hello Welcome to DIRECTV" screen (Note: the box will reboot during
this time, this is normal).

Note: When the record light illuminates RED for `2-3 seconds, release the
buttons.

5. DO NOT unplug/reset or interrupt power at this time! The estimated wait time
until you see the "Hello Welcome" screen after pressing and holdingdown the
Record & Down Arrow buttons could take UP TO TWO MINUTES. Average time is 1
minute.

6. At this point the box has rebooted and the drive has been reformatted.

7. Then you should see the 1st guided setup scree, the language selection
screen, in about 5 to 6 minutes.

Note: When I followed these steps, my HR20 did not go thru the guided setup
process. Just MyVOD and SL's were empty. HR20 restarts after this step. No
guided setup begins.

8. Continue installing as normal

From a post in another thread, I followed these instructions in my test lab and they worked very well.

A reformat with a complete reset definitely allowed me to set manual recurring recordings that would not work before. Alas, I still had one lockup this morning.

You can also just choose to "Reset Everything" on the DVR. This formats as well.

Formatting the unit fixed the problems I was having a month or so ago.

I do not think that you have an HR20. You bought this back in July before even Earl had an HR20. Maybe it is a 10? I think that the steps to reformat are the same but I would double check.

You are correct, Craig! I hit the wrong mod # on the drop down...I have the R-20 DVR. Wishful thinking I guess. If D* ever gets some decent (and More) programming available in my area I will go to HD. Until then....
