Odd failure the remote address locked up. Even resetting software will not move the address or get it back to one. Anyhow phone tech tried what I already had and deemed the reciver dead.

Tried multiple other remotes they work with everything but this 4000....
I called replacement and they just have the 501 upgrade path for $200

I had hoped they would have a sweeter deal where the system is under warranty. I am unsue what to do. I may just drop the one receiver, its listed as our primary one. I may have a 4000 lying around, have to check not sure.

Anyone get a better deal? Of course I would like a 721 for free...

Well thats too good but I can dream:)

The 4000 is a UHF remote only receiver thus most universal IR remotes will not control it.. If you have front panel control, then you should be able to order a blue button UHF replacement remote from E*. Just out of curiousity did you try replacing the batteries in the remote?

Its the receiver NOT the remote! I have other receivers and tried their remote and they dont work either. Receiver diagnostics remote test says remote code 1 box 6 mismatch. But it will not let me change the code. Old remotes sat red mode light flash, address 1 address red record. The remote code doesnt flash. I can do this successfully on my other receivers.
Then I tried repeatedly restet the receiver to factiry defaults. This should take the remote code back to one but again its stuck.
Set remote to code 1 on other reciver, confirmed it worked. with remote. Tried this remote on dead box whos address is supposedly 1. No joy:(

I just think that E should offer a better deal upgrade for those whos receiver died under system warranty. Perhaps they dont to discourage such failures where people would report bogus problems to upgrade.

I would think a free 301 or a 501 for $99 would be fair. Threaten to cancel if they don't offer such a deal. This may or may not work. Or, you can buy a 301 for about $89 at Sams club.

I keep waiting for my 4000 to die, but it just keeps on working for me.

Bob, I am still confused so humor me. You are on the "System Info" screen on the 4000 and it says "remote address: 6"... so say you press mode sat address (light blinks) 15 address (light blinks 3 times) then the rec button on your "black button" remote. The remote address number does not change on the system info screen? Lastly you did pull the power plug on ol Betsy for a good minute or so to clear out any scrambled software upgrades? She should be on either 7.60 or 7.61 as of 7/18/02.

Yep thats what happens, will not accept a new code, or even change it back to one by resetting receiver to factory defaults. Pulling the plug or card is meaningleess as well. Something died..

I will drop the reciver for now and replace it later with a pvr.

I dont have the $ for a 721 and even if I did I want to see what happens when they get their first software upgrade.

I am concerned it might be a rerun of the dP mess and dont want to buy into it.

Ah, I hate to break it to you, but the OS being Linux means nothing. There are an equal number of bad Linux programmers as well as MS-OS programmers. Who knows, maybe they all work at Echostar and were formerly on the DP development team.

Just a thought. Have you tried setting your remote to the same address as your 4000 unit? It could be worth a try.

Also wondering what you mean when you say your system is under warranty (are you talking about the $1.99 a month deal)? If so the unit is under warranty and it is up to Dish to fix or replace it.

I am not suprised, my peace of crap 4900 reciever that I have always has problems, it freezes up, likes to shut it's self off and reset sometimes when I put it on channel 170 which I watch. Of course when I call them up they deny that there anything wrong with my receiver, by the way this is my second 4900. And anyway they will just end up giving me another 4900 since all the 4900 are crap recievers, heck all dish network recievers are crap. Why can't we have quality receivers like DirecTV that can hold more stinking info on the guide and not freeze up and reset all the time.
