Long story, but my broadband DECA is dead. Ordered a new one and it'll be here next week.

In the mean time... I'm not worried about the whole home setup, but more so getting an IP address to my HR24-500. Question is, can I plug in an cat5 into the back, plug it into my router as a temporary fix? Then when the DECA arrives, unplug and connect it back?

Yes. While the CAT5 is plugged into the HR24, it will not be able to MRV with the other receivers as you already mentioned. When you get the new CCK, unplug the CAT5 to the HR24 and perform a menu reset. That will re-enable the internal DECA in the HR24.
