Two years ago I had Dish Network installed in a new apartment. I had asked for a DVR that could record one show while I watched another. The installer came and installed the service on time and it was the best picture quality I have ever seen for a cable/sat service. There was no contract and this was in February.
I soon found out that they had left the wrong box and I could only record what was being watched, they said that was that. In March I recieved a bill for a $50 pay per view event that I neither ordered nor viewed. After getting them to remove it finally (4 calls) I had a password placed on the box restricting pay ordering. By April a tree was growing in and I started to lose signal, eventually the picture wasn't watchable and when service came they said there was no way to make it work writing that on the slip. I called to cancel service repeating what their tech told me verbatum. They told me if I ever wanted service I would have to provide a deposit because I had canceled and then told me I had to get on the roof and retrieve the dish itself or the LNB. I found an installer to give me one and sent everything back.
Despite the experience I am considering getting the service again. The DVR while not providing the two tuners (that won't happen again) had tremendous functionality way beyond my cable DVR. The picture was like a DVD and the cost of programming is much more reasonable than cable.
I'm looking for feedback on how to order it and avoid what I ran into before. Where I live now has a clear line of sight with no trees. I also don't understand why they'd want a desposit from me because of their problem. Maybe because they had to pay the contract installer anyway. I haven't called to order yet so maybe thats not even going to come up.
