Monthly fees are the same whether you lease or own, so very little benefit to owning. Channel lineups are quite different, so check out THIS list. Also Dish is releasing a brand new system (Hopper) in a few weeks, if you can wait that long. Both sat providers are great and much better and cheaper than cable in most parts of the country.

First, list your favorite channels.
Second, list your favorite sports
Third, list your favorite movie channels

Then, compare the available listings of channels on both providers and see which one has all (or more of) the channels you want.

DISH has more basic channels in HD, DirecTV has more sports channels in HD. DirecTv has Major League Baseball, Football (exclusive) and several other sports.

Once once you have decided which provider has the channels you want, then you can begin to decide what equipment you will need.

It all depends what is more important to you, the equipment, the channel availability, the sports, the price, etc.

Post a little more info, and we can help you out.

Yes I saw where Hopper was supposed to come out on the 15 I think, any ways thanks for letting me know probably a waste of money buying my own system...As I was reading on one system it said if you send in your rebate before the installation you would get the discount with the first bill but if you send it in after the installation it will be 6 to 8 weeks... How do I make sure I can get it in before the install...Back to the hopper this thing is a dual turner and can record up to 6 shows at once correct, so its a dvr with dual tuner, whats this cost extra a month to have? Oh and yes I have until the 28 th of next month to find something so I still have some learning time....

Do you have a link to that rebate offer? Since everything is free to begin with I'm wonder what the rebate is for.

With both sat companies, your primary DVR is included in your package no matter how many tuners. With Dish there is a $6/mo. DVR fee (DirecTV is $8) plus a $4 whole home DVR fee (DirecTV is $3), both of which covers all DVRs on your account. Each additional Joey is $7 (DirecTV is $6 for each additional).

DirecTV's new customer deal is significantly cheaper the first 2 years, then about the same as Dish after that. Both have referral discounts as well.

The Hopper/Joey system is a whole-house solution for HD service. If you only own one HD TV then you could get away with one HD DVR in dual mode. This allows you to watch two different programs with the primary in HD (or SD) and the second in SD (delivered to your remote TV via RF just like analog cable).

It is very important you decide a few things like has been pointed out. Saving a little for something you don't like is a waste.

Decide if HD is important, not important, very important.
Decide if your local sports teams being in HD all the time is important.

In an over simplification those are the major every day differences between Dish and Direct without getting into equipment differences. Don't go by any claims either makes.

With Dish, you WILL get more of the non sports channels in HD, channels that you may watch everyday. Dish has something like 15 to 18 of those channels in HD that Direct TV does not. But if you happen to never watch those channels it may not make a difference.

Direct TV has not only more sports including the NFL Sunday Ticket, but your local teams will always be in HD, it is more hit and miss with Dish.

Pricing is close, in general Dish is a little less including all fees and package prices, Direct a little more, but it really depends on your set-up.

As for equipment, don't let anyone talk into one or the other based on equipment. Both are better than Cable generally is. Dish is coming out very soon with their new whole home set-up, Direct has had that for awhile. But if you don't need that there are other options.
Also don't let anyone tell one or the other has better picture quality. While they may be ever so slightly different, both are very good for HD.

When you know what is important to you I would strongly suggest you talk to a Dish CSR that is available on this forum and ask them questions and get a correct quote. Then compare that when you call or go to the Direct site. I happen to have Dish and have been with them for many years, but if I didn't, Direct hands down would be my next choice.

One more thing I fee l need to add. Dish just upgraded their website. It has some errors as to a couple of channels (Disney I think) that they do not carry but it says they do, and a couple of instances in the lowest packages where it says a channel is in HD, but in that package it is not. But that is only the very lowest of the packages. Otherwise pretty accurate. I am not aware Direct has any errors, but they too just make some changes to packages so if you are not sure just ask about a channel or package.

Dish does carry Disney and ABC Family but in SD only due to a dispute.

So I don't repeat myself, I posed some information that may be useful to you in another thread.

Other questions:

  • How many TVs do you have?
  • How many of them are in HD?
  • Can you live with SD for some of them?
  • How many people in your household? Would they all be watching different programs at the same time?
