All in the name of customer service! :)

(As in, they want the customers to avoid calling DIRECTV customer service if your receiver suddenly stops responding, and all the customer has to do is change out the batteries on the remote!) :p
Someone might want the remote replaced under the Protection Plan:)

I got a good 19 months out of those batteries now only if my air conditioner would tell me when to clean the filter will it be a perfect world :D

Most $50 programmable thermostats will tell you when to replace the filter based on hours of use. Or, you could spend a few grand and get a "connected" thermostat and a home control server and have ite-mail you when it's time. :)

Mine does have a flashing LED that comes on every week that says "Clean Filter." But it has nothing to do with whether the filter is dirty or not, I could have just cleaned it and it would still light up.

And in my experience, the remote will work for a long time after that message first pops up, although the batteries are indeed weakening.

Wow... Very cool... Haven't heard of this one....

Did the screen saver just pop up while you were watching live tv?
On mine, it is not a screen saver, just a superimposed message that can come up after pusing a button on the remote.

Ahhh... Sorry, should have read the OP more closely... I see now that he said "screen"... and not "screen saver"... :)

So was it just in the bottom right corner in one of the blue display boxes or something?

Yeah, like the friendly one that says that your remote is in TV mode or whatever it says.

Gotcha...
Lots of battery powered devices are starting to do this.. Even the wireless mouse on my home laptop will show battery level and popup when close to dead..

Not battery powered, but my HP printer will tell me I'm almost out of ink about a month before I'm actually out of ink :nono2:

My Microsoft wireless computer mouse and keyboard have been operating just fine for over a year on the first set of batteries installed. :)
