It's not really dead it is stuck on the channel it's on.
Will not respond to remote except mute & volume,
guide activates from front panel as does active and menue.
I have re-checked all cables, red button restart, un-plugged power cord
for 15 minutes, disconected sat in cables.

I thought it might be the Remote, but I tried another one that I had
used earlier and it wouldn't work either, both remotes were then
reset to factory defaults.

Would appreciate any help. I dread calling D*for help....

thanks

Does it go back to the same channel everytime you reboot?

Instead of an RBR have you tried doing a menu reset?

Menu->Parental, Fav's & Setup->System Setup->Reset->Reset Receiver/Defaults/Everything.

Becareful with Reset Everything. It will wipe out your recordings.

After you reset try unplugging for >30 minutes.

Let us know if any of this helps and what happens.

We'll keep plugging at it until we figure something out.

Yes, It is stuck there :)

Cannot communicate with menu.

Menu->Parental, Fav's & Setup->System Setup->Reset->Reset Receiver/Defaults/Everything.

Can't reset, cannot communicate with unit :(

Have unplugged twice, didn't really time. one was about 15 min
the other was longer. will try again.

Thank you Mike for your help

Bill

I forgot to mention that the blue light that blinks evertime you press a key does not blink when
you press the remote control. However it does blink and the unit responds to the buttons on the
front pannel, just Guide, Menu, Active, Info. and Res. They just come up on the screen and will not respond.

Is it possible you activated a favorites list that had only one channel? If that happens, Channel + and - won't work. I know this sounds bizarre, but it has happened to me before. ;)

How long was it actually working?

Where did you get the unit?

I'd call D* and ask for a replacement.
Got it at Best Buy, It ran just fine most of the day and only
started this awhile ago.
It is brand new out of the box.

I was trying to change the Remote to RF and it kept telling me
to attach the antenna. While I was fooling around to see if it
really neede antenna I came back and it wouldnt respond, rebooted
and it came back up on channel 360 just fine and later when I tried
to change channels it froze again. and it is still froze

I'm going to guess that the unit went into RF mode but your remote controls arent...and you need a code from the unit to setup the remote.

The 'reset all' from the front panel buttons ought to take it back out to IR mode.

The HR's cant do IR and RF at the same time...one or the other.

I agreee... but you don't need to reset the reciever... You can access the screen you need from the front panel and then program the remote... Hit Menu> Setup> System Setup> Remote> IR/RF Setup > Choose IR and continue > and follw the instructions... See if you can get it working properly in IR again... Then follow the exact same procedure and see if you can get it back to RF..

The remote control slide switch IS set to 'directv' right?

My kid changes it all the time...
Yes indeedy, I also tried two old D* remotes which both work on my
HR20 and the new HR22 just sits there with a blue eye that won't
blink at any of the three remotes, but will blink at the front panel buttons.

EUREKA! t_h, YOU win. Looks like the unit went into RF mode and hung up
without accepting the Remote codes.

Many thanks

Thanks inkahauts, that was the problem, while I was attempting to change
it from IR to RF it changed to Rf but failed to accept the Remote codes.

glad that's over, I was afraid I might have to send it back and start over.

Again, thanks to all

kw you were right on this one 4me.........I tried everything from different remotes, multiple resets and finally called D* and told them the HR20 must have a bad sensor. They are in the process of sending me a new one. Then I read your post went down and checked my receiver and damn if all the channels in my fav list had gotten wiped out somehow. So now I have order restored and a new DVR {Model unknown} headed my way. Now do I swap out the HR20 and get a newer model of keep on keeping on with the one I have???????? Decisions, decisions…………. Anyway good call and for sure one to remember for future reference.

If you are using an OTA antenna, I would keep the HR20.

This is from the RC64R manual. You can download it from Directv.

I'd provide a link but I can't get there from work.

Code:
ACTIVATING AND DEACTIVATING THE RF TRANSMITTER

Your DIRECTV Remote Control features RF (radio
frequency) capability. When you activate the RF feature of
your remote control, you can control your DIRECTV
Receiver from anywhere in your home. You do not need to
be within the line of sight of your receiver to control it.
NOTE: Not all DIRECTV Receivers are RF-capable.
      Also, some RF-capable DIRECTV Receivers
include integrated RF antennas and do not
require an external antenna. If your receiver
requires the external RF antenna, before activating
the RF transmitter, locate the RF antenna
included with your remote control and insert it
into the RF remote antenna coaxial connector on
the back of your DIRECTV Receiver.
      Activating the RF Transmitter

To activate the RF transmitter on your DIRECTV Remote
Control, perform the following steps:
1. Locate the 12 digit Receiver ID (RID) number of your
DIRECTV Receiver. You can find the RID number on
the back panel of your receiver, or inside the CAM
access door next to the reset button.
2. Write down the last six digits of the RID number.
3. Slide the mode switch to DIRECTV, AV1, or AV2.
4. Press and hold the MUTE and SELECT keys until the
green light under the selected switch flashes twice and
   release both keys.
5. Using the number keys, enter 9 6 1. (The green light
   flashes twice.)
6. Press and release CHAN UP. (The green light flashes
   twice.)
7. Using the NUMBER keys, enter the the last six digits of
the RID number. (See step 2 above.)
8. Press and release the SELECT key. (The green light
   flashes twice.)

Deactivating the RF Transmitter
To deactivate the RF transmitter on your DIRECTV Remote
Control, perform the following steps:
1. Slide the mode switch to DIRECTV, AV1, or AV2.
2. Press and hold the MUTE and SELECT keys until the
green light under the selected switch flashes twice and
   release both keys.
3. Using the number keys, enter 9 6 1. (The green light
   flashes twice.)
4. Press and release CHAN DOWN. (The green light flashes
twice.)

The RF transmitter on your remote control is now
deactivated. To reactivate the RF transmitter, See
“Activating the RF Transmitter” above.

Let's deal with that if it happens. We don't need to borrow problems from the future.

Reading this and I realized we're going to see a whole new type of complaints...the customers that purchase an HR22 with 500GB have it go bad and get a refurb HR20/21 sent as a replacement by DirecTV.
Time will tell. It would also be pretty easy to turn all HR21's into HR22's when they refurb them just by replacing the HD.
