Nasa TV has been HD for years. Its on AMC3 C band. I doubt you will see it in HD on DirecTv until they launch another satellite.

Humm ...;

Let me see if I'm understanding this correctly. According to the press release There are currently four of these Public/Media NASA channels on what I assume are multiplexed onto this same C-band satellite transponder aboard AMC3.

Channel 101 -- "Public Channel" programming (SD) This one is the one usually carried by most CATV and DBS satellite operators, therefore I assume is the one carried by DIRECTV on ch. 289
Channel 102 -- "Education Channel" programming (SD)
Channel 103 -- "Media Channel" programming (SD)
Channel 105 -- "HD Channel" (HD).

Now on Feb. 17 the current HD channel 105 will be eliminated and channels 101, 102, and 103 will convert to HD.

So in answer to the OP, I would say that while the SD feed DIRECTV is using (likely the "Public Channel" 101) for the NASA channel will go HD on Feb. 17. DIRECTV will probably just down-rez it to SD and continue with business as usual with the NASA channel in SD as always.
