I am considering going back to cable, I will need a DVR.

I need it to be able to handle analog cable and digital cable. Do have options besides a TiVo? The cable company does not offer a DVR,

Google Moxi. Great DVR with no monthly fees. The box is a little expensive but they make a multiple (3+) tuner models and Moxi mates so you can have a whole home DVR solution.

You can always use a PC.
Kevin,

I checked out Moxi. Looks like they aren't doing retail now.

I have considered using a PC, but my wife will be the primary user of it.

I may have have an issue with Tivo. My cable company doesn't use cable cards, or boxes, the channels are filtered at the pole. I am trying to get confirmation those channels will work with a Tivo. Do you know?

Without a cablecard, you will not be able to receive any encrypted channels, which would be the bulk of HD channels. You'd still have to pay the TiVo monthly fee. Not a good idea.
Does anybody make a decent hard drive recorder without the guide info?

A windows media center based device would be your best bet.

HDPVR from Hauppauge
Some DVD recorders also have built in hard drives you can record to.

Will you really be happy with DVD quality after getting used to HD??

I couldn't agree more. BluRay recorder it is! :D

Another idea is for a Windows Media Center PC as a host server in a closet somewhere then have an Xbox at the TVs to watch with.

I would get a ceton or silicon dust or hapaug cable card tuner.

hapaug tv tuner I won this http://www.hauppauge.com/site/products/data_dcr2650.html it work good 2 tuner "least expensive".

ceton http://cetoncorp.com/products/ 4 tuner

Silicon dust 3 tuners. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815345006

All you need is a M cable card from your cable provider.
Being realistic, DVD quality is still very good, and cable HD quality is usually worse than DVD anyway, at least it is in my market. I used a DVD recorder similar to the magnavox above as my DVR for years. The PQ was great, although it was a little inconvenient dealing with manual timers and using blasters. The main benefit is it doesn't require a PC or cable card.
The problem with that is it won't get all your subscribed channels, only analog and clear QAM. These days you really need a cable card based tuner as linked above. I have a low end silicon dust one that I got for about $80 (2 tuner WinTV DCR-2650) and it's absolutely brilliant. If you don't want to bother with a PC or get a Tivo, hold out a few more months for the Ceton Q.

The way I have mine set up, you can't even tell you're using a PC. My xbox is the interface, and I just use a regular universal remote. The windows media center interface is far better than any satellite or cable DVR, you get all your subscribed channels, and storage is essentially unlimited. Granted you need a PC, but any fairly recent low end PC will do just fine. It doesn't even have to be anywhere near your TV, especially if you use an extender like xbox.

Your cable company is required by law to provide cable cards. It's an FCC regulation and they can't get away from that legal requirement.

They might just be trying to "discourage" cable cards. I also find it unusual that a cable company wouldn't have DVRs available.
Yeah, something doesn't add up.
You say you need a box that handles analog and digital cable. But then you say your cable company doesn't have cable cards or boxes.
Well obviously both can NOT be true. If there is digital cable service available, then they ARE providing cable cards/boxes. There is a monthly fee for them of course.
You need to go back and talk to someone at the cable company, you either talked to the janitor the first time or you completely misunderstood something.

Anyway, your options are:
1) get a DVR from the cable company (if available - and I bet it is).
2) get a TIVO (with cable card from cable company - by law has to be made available to you).
3) get one of the solutions already mentioned in this thread. Not really a whole lot available beyond that.
