I have never used a SWM yet, so I have some questions please.

I have a customer that lives in a condo. They have 1 standard receiver installed. They want to upgrade to HD, and swap the standard for an HD receiver, and add an additional HD box. Here's what I found when I went out there.

An 18x20 dish on a pole in the back shared by 3 units. 3 lines coming off the dish going to 3 different units (there is only 1 wire originally going to each unit, run underground), each of the 3 satellite wires is diplexed outside with their association provided cable, and inside each condo garage (inside a wall plate), the other diplexer sends the sat signal to 1 TV, and cable to the other 2 outlets.

I told him there was no way to do what he wanted with the traditional ka/ku LNB. It is not an option to run additional wires to the unit's homerun, or run them outside.

My question is, would the SWM8 or SWMline work better in this situation?

If I change the shared 18x20 dish with either setup above, would the other 2 units run like the old setup with the sat and cable diplexed before it goes to each unit?

It would have to be split 3 ways outside to go to each of 3 units, and split again 2 ways inside his unit, is that possible?

Could the power inserter go in his garage or inside his condo somewhere, and power the switch (or LNB) for all of them?

Technicaly you could install a 5LNB>SWM8..
Then the SWM output goes to the apt with HD, then to PI and finaly recievers..
Then the other 2 apt just get hooked to the legacy ports..
This should work..

Does the switch still need to be powered for the legacy ports to work, say if the one guy sold his unit and disconnected the PI?

So I could put the SWM8 outside, and split 2 or 3 ways inside the unit? Should the PI be placed before the splitter in the garage, or by one of the receivers?

BTW the switch would have to go outside somewhere, has anyone done this?

At least as long as the other two apartments don't get the idea that they want HD as well...

If the other apartments want HD all that needs to be done is install a splitter at the SWM. If only one other wants HD, the SWM has a second SWM output via it own built in splitter. 8 tuners/4 DVR's max though.

I have read that it can be powered by the third legacy port, but this has NOT been tested by me.

Yes you can split 2 or 3 ways inside the unit...this is what makes the SWM so nice to use.

The PI can be in the garage or by a receiver...your choice

Yes, the SWM can go outside, I have mine right next to my dish
