Need some advice. Moving 2 times over the next 9 months.

We are in the process of selling our home. We are currently building a custom home and the projected completion date is next April. In the interim, we will be moving to either a rental home or rental condo/apt for approx 6-8 months.

The movers program states only once in 12 month period can you do the movers program. Does that mean I would do the movers program to the rental and then have to cancel service all together next April and just sign up for new service in April at the new house?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

You can move multiple times, but DirecTV will only pay for it once. Maybe use a local installer for your final move, especially since you're moving into a custom house; you may have some special requirements that you'll have to pay for either way.

No. You can use the Movers Program more than once in a 12 month period, however, the second time you will have to pay a fee, which I believe would be in the $50-$100 range. Basically, with the Movers Program, they are performing an install for you for free. Since you'll have a second move in that 12 month period, they're going to want to you help out with the cost of the second install.

They allow you to pay for the second move. :)

Be very proactive with your builder so I don't have to drill holes through the walls of your new home. ;)

The higher end rental properties in Wake County are pretty picky about dishes choose carefully.
Another thought. Could I just suspend my service, use (gasp) cable in the rental and then when we move, use the movers program?

And yes, I am already having the home theater company I use do all the prewire, etc. All the D* guy will have to do is install the dish, align it, and plug his cable at a junction located where the dish will go :)
People do that, some aparments include basic cable an internet in the rent.
If we do a rental house then we'll definitely have to do either cable or sat. If an apt, there might actually be cable like you say. I'll check into it.

Sounds like the account suspend and then reactivate with the movers program is the way to go.
Home Theater types have a tendency to be illiterate about the NEC. I'll be looking to ground at the house power meter. Tell them not to bother with fittings.

SWM16's get pretty warm, those central wiring boxes they stick under the stairs should have some ventilation.

Yes, you can suspend service when you move into the rental and then use Mover's Connection to get set up at the new house. However, you are only allowed to suspend your account for 6 months within a 12 month period. It's possible that you might be able to get them to extend it for another 3 months, but that is not guaranteed.

Great, thanks all for the advice in info!

From my experience in situations like this they will allow you to extend the suspension. My buddy had a house fire and was out of his home for 9 months while it was being rebuilt. After 6 months he called DirecTV up and explained the situation and they had no problem extending it for another 6 months for him. They told him just to call back up when he was ready to move back in if it before the 6 months were up, or call in again in 6 months and they could extend it again if his house still wasn't ready.

I have read on here of them doing similar things for others in similar situations, house fires, extended remodels, etc.

There's always exceptions to the rule. It's just not a guarantee though. :)

We were in a similar situation, renting a home while our new one was being built. We had a tripod and dish we used for camping, set this up on the deck of the rental home, and changed our service address so we could get the new locals. We then used Mover's Connection when we moved into the new house.

Of course, this was all easier back then as we didn't have HD yet, and all we needed was a single 18" round dish.
I had the same issue. Moved to a new city and lived in an apartment for six months before purchasing a house. Directv attempted to charge me for the second movers connect when we moved into our house. I nicely told the CSR that I did not agree with the fee since I would not have to pay a fee to the local cable company if I moved within the same city.

The CSR waived the fee for me due to being a long time customer and never asking for discounts before. So worst case scenario it can't hurt to ask them to waive the fee. It can be done. At least it could be done as of one year ago.

If you go the cable route in the rental and you are in good standing with DIRECTV, you might want to consider cancelling service. Then they will send you the "We want you back offer" which is sometimes as good as the new customer offer. Maybe even get an HR34 for free.
So after racking my brain about this, what I decided to do is use the movers program to move from here to the apartment we will be in while waiting for our new house to get built (8 months in the apartment). The movers special right now is the premiere package for 3 months and NFLST Max for free and free installation. To good to pass up as I need my football! Then....when we move in 8 months, call and ask for the movers program again and if they decline or want to charge for it, then we can just cancel all together and have my wife sign up as a new sub.

Initially we were just going to suspend our account and then activate with a movers program move at that time but as I said, I can't handle missing my football and I really have no desire to have Time Warner for 8 months.

Just a heads up, but the Mover's Connection right now comes with a 12 month agreement. So if you try to cancel after 8 months you will owe them an $80 Early Termination Fee (4 months x $20 = $80).
Rats! Foiled again. Guess I'm back to the original idea of just suspending service for 8 months.
Just called to suspend service and instead the agent opened a Brinks truck for me using the movers program and also notated in my record that she discussed waiving the 2nd move install fee 8 months later. Very happy with Directv right now and SO GLAD we don't have to have time warner for the next 8 months. WOOHOO!!!!

Excellent! Thanks for sharing your experience. It is nice to hear the good stories too.
