New 722 help

Several friends and I are switching from the Directv's HR20 to the Dish 722. What differences should we be aware of please? How do the hard drives compare? Using an outside antenna can we record three HD channel at the same time? Do they play back the same way because I read somewhere that the 722 must record the entire program before allowing for play back? Any help will be greatly appreciated. You know how it is trying to get used to something new.

I am not familiar with the HR20, so I don't know the differences. However, with an OTA antenna, you can record three HD programs (2 sat, 1 OTA) at the same time, you can start playback at whatever time you want and add time while it's still recording with not much problem. I'm sure people will chime in to answer your other concerns.
Thanks Garys. From what little I know about the 722, the steps required to record a program compared to the HR20 seem a bit more complicated. Especially to record each new episode only. Anybody else that may have experience with these two DVR's your opinions would be greatly appreciated.

I had D* before I switch to E* recently. I had an HR-20 as well.

The Vip722 is a much better DVR. The menu are better laid out and more responsive. The record feature are better on E*. For example my wife loves Judge Judy and she had a "Season List First Run only" set it for it on D* yet it would record tons of re-runs as D* guide did not have correct info for Judge Judy ever and always assumed all episodes were First run and record all of them. On E* it only records new episodes but the reason it works is because the guide data E* provides is more complete thus the DVR can tell which episodes to record and which to skip. You can record 2 Sat streams + 1 OTA stream at the same time while watch 2 recorded shows(if you have Vip722 in dual TV mode connected to 2 TV).

You can watch a program while it is being record without any issues at all. I do it all time. For example I wait for tv show to be 20 minutes into the recording before I start watching it so I can skip all the commercials and it is never an issue. Just remember if you want to stop watching the show just switch channels do not hit the stop button if you are watch a show while it is recording as it will stop recording.

The installer is here now and before he went up on the roof to swap out dishes he handed me a channel guide. If the guide is up to date then I must say I wish I had stayed with "D". I'm giving up the following HD channels, SciFi, USA, TBS, Bravo, ESPN News, Spike, A&E, History Channel, and FX. The sales guy told me that the HD channels were pretty much the same as "D". I don't call missing these 9 channels pretty much the same. Maybe Bravo and FX but come on, TBS, ESPN News, SciFi, USA, History Channel.

Not sure what you're looking at but Dish has all those channels in HD other than FX.

No Spike TV HD either.

Oh yeah that too I guess. Guess I missed one.
It really depends what package he signed up for as Bravo HD is included in Turbo HD Silver or AT200+ and SciFi HD is only included in Turbo HD Gold or AT250+ everything else is included in Turbo HD Bronze or AT100 except Spike HD and FX HD.

But to get all the channels he listed with D* he had to be on choice extra package or better which is more expensive than AT250 or HD Turbo Gold.
That channel guide is not at all accurate. It still shows all the VOOM channels, of which none are offered now. Hit your guide button until is shows all hd at the top and scroll though it, that is the best way to see all that is offered.

Actually SciFi HD is in the bronze package and of course SciFi is in the corresponding AT100.
