New HD DVR

I have finally decided to bite the bullet and go to HD DVR. I have a friend who bought one through ebay for half the price and yes it was brand new. will he have problems getting it hooked up with D** Heck I am interested if it is legit.. Thanks in advance

He might have terrific problems getting it authorized if it's one that was leased and not purchased.

Are you with DIRECTV® now? Either way, I'd call first and see what they'll set you up with and for how much. Myself, I'll have nothing to do with eBay for electronic equipment. Personal choice.

As all of mine were purchased, I do not understand what you mean by leased. Why would that be a problem. My friend and I both have accounts.

Many people have thought they were purchased, such as getting one at Best Buy, but they weren't. If the Access Card department is given the Receiver ID, and they say its owned, then it is.

If you got your boxes prior to I believe March 2006, that was before they went to the lease model.

I decided to check with D** about my three receivers and two are purchased while the other is leased. I asked how that was when I have the visa record I payed for them. I also bought them direct from D**. Not sure it is worth the fight though..
The reason this post was started is..My d-10 (yes that is how long I have been with D** haha) finally has given up the ghost. It will not stay on. When I turn it on it says aquiring signal, then turns back off.. So I have decided I might as well go HD. I did get a letter from D** for a Upgrade to a genie...I am not sure if this is the way to go as my wife likes her own channels and my kids like theirs. I am open for advice..Thanks

Are going to upgrade all boxes? If so, the Genie can't be beat....even if you don't upgrade all, it can't be beat, though I don't think SD boxes will work with HD boxes on a Whole House basis.

Paying for a receiver doesn't mean it's owned. You can pay $400 for a Genie and $200 for a HR2x, and they are leased.

What are your other receivers?

all of my receivers are d10
what do you mean I might of bought them but they can still be lease? who decides this?

I think all d10s are probably owned. All units after march 06 are leased, even though you pay for them. It is possible to get an owned receiver, but it is getting harder and more expensive to do so. Typically an owned dvr from DirecTV will cost over $400, not the $100 or $200 you pay for a leased unit.

So if leased is the way most receivers are going, why will my friend have problems with the dvr he bought from ebay if it is leased?

HR21 PRO's are NOT LEASED and available for under 250.00 shipped. However most agree that the HR24 is superior and can be bought for as little as 159.00 with 24 month committment aka LEASE!

If it is leased, one should return it if he leaves DTV (and he will be hit with a fee if he doesn't). However some fall through the cracks, and end up on ebay. DTV will not activate a previously leased unit.

I think me question has been changed somewhat. This was the original question. The unit he bought is brand new never opened. After I asked this question the next person said he would have problems. Please tell me why..He saved 100.00 off the D** price for the exact unit and I am sure if he bought it from D** or some other guy they both will be lease. He plans on putting it on his own account

Tell your friend to call and ask for the authorizations department. He will need the receiver ID number available when he calls. They are the only ones than can answer the question.

On a second note: I believe they are phasing out the D10. You might ask them what it would cost for you to upgrade to HD. You might be surprised at how cheap it is.

I have just been on Ebay and searched. Most of the receivers there are close to retail or even above unless it is one of the older models.
What model number did he get.

Thanks Jimmie57 for getting back to me. He purchased a HR 24 HD/DVR Receiver. it cost him $159.00 (he said he saved 100.00 but I can get them for 199.00 and no headache wondering if they are going to work)
As I have been reading this forum, I have had my eyes opened and have noticed there is a lot of new models etc out there. My three units are D-10's and one will not power up anymore. Can someone give me advice as what units I should get. During the summer I put one in my RV but am not sure if I can do this with HD and that new dish.

DirecTV sent me 2 replacement receivers when my D11 receivers started dropping channels. All I had to pay was $20 for shipping.

If you stay with SD and want to buy a certain model ( still is leased ) I would get this one.

What you showed me was a D-12... If I go HD though should I get a HR-24 (my kids and wife like to watch their own shows and want to record their shows) or should I get a genie I think they are HR-34. I could be wrong. Or is there a better way for me to go?
Should I get a HD for the RV that will work on a round dish that I have for RV plus different ones for house?

The D12 was for the RV and it can come into the house and be used on the new SWM setups for the HD Whole Home DVR service.
The HD receivers will also work with the Round dish. You just have to set it up in the satellite setup, to choose the dish, multi switch, and choose 1 tuner since you probably only have one coax from this dish.

I can't say about the HR34 since I do not have one. I do have the HR24 and like it a lot.

You need a new Dish for HD.
