New HDMI problem

I have lost the use of the HDMI port on my HR20 as of Friday night, now putting out either black screen or widely spaced horizontal "snow" streaks.
I was changing HDMI cables, inserting a 2x1 HDMI switch for my Tosh HDA2 and HR20 to share the one input on my Tosh 30HF85 direct view CRT. While plugging in the new cable, I saw a very small spark from the cable to the DVR, after which the HDMI port quit working. Component works fine, and HDMI worked with 0x10b since the "Santa" update was made available.
Tonight I called D*, and advanced tech support told me that they are specifically told not to replace or service call for any HDMI problems at this time, as they think it is a software problem. I think this one is a hardware issue....what do you think?

It doesn't sound very good.

Sparks usually mean "bad things", especially on electronics.

I would recommend unplugging things when messing with the plugs. I have taken out a system board on a server by not doing that and it has been a rule of thumb for me from there on.

Good Luck!

My thoughts exactly! Making it all the more frustrating that they will not replace the unit for me. I don't beleive software will fix this particular issue. BTW, the HR20 was off, and the switch was switched to the second (non HR20) input at the time I saw the spark.

Many HDMI devices output power..I have a 4 way HDMI switch that came with a power supply-have never need the supply, it always has power.. Were all devices unplugged? any that were on at the time may have been dammaged...
The only device that seems to be affected is the HR20. The HDMI switch, the TV's HDMI input, and the HD-A2 all seem to work fine. All things point to the hr20's HDMI port.
Any suggestions on how to get D* to replace this unit?

Yeah, no software is going to fix that hdmi port, if you saw a spark its done. The off switch on any DVR is not an off switch, it is a standby switch with everything but the hard drive still powered. As recommended in every TV, DVR, or Receiver manual it says to unplug device before removing or attatching cables. I believe DTV will consider this failure negligence and void the warranty, so don't tell DTV that you saw the spark when plugging it in.

Now, to get to your problem of getting DTV to replace your unit. DO you have the protection package?? If you do, just call them and tell them you had a power surge and the unit won't power up. They will send you a replacement and you ship the bad unit back. There is no check to see if you really had a problem, just that they received the defective unit back. OR make up any story thats covered in the protection package. IF you don't have the protection package it might not be a bad thing to add if you have more than one high end receiver.

If you don't have the protection package, are you in warranty period?? If so, call them up and tell them the unit stopped working. Won't boot up or receive channels. Something, that couldn't be your error. They'll send you new unit. IF you are out of warranty, call and ask them to replace it anyway and if they don't, ask to talk to retentions and threaten to cancel service. If you are a good customer, retentions will do whatever they can to keep you and should send out a replacement whether your in warranty or out.

Good luck, I had an HR10-250 that I bought when they first came out and was out of warranty. Retentions replaced it without a hassle.
