I am trying to plan for RG6 cabling requirements for a new construction home and these are the variables I am trying to manage:

  • Cabling from the satellite dish to the 622 Dish receiver, and also any other receiver locations in the house.
  • Cabling for TV2 home distribution from the 622.
  • Cabling for OTA antenna hookup for viewing digital broadcast local stations outside of the Dish receiver through each TV's digital tuner.

Question: Do each of the three variables above require separate cabling, or can some (or all) be combined to share the same cable?

Using a diplexer, you can combine on a single RG6 cable either dish and TV2,
or dish and OTA antenna. This will not cause any signal quality problems to any of the signals.

Diplexers work.. But if you are pre-wiring, It is always better to actually have the wires put in for what you need. I would never plan a pre-wire to use a diplexer.

Have you thought about other than RG6 for phones/networking/alarm?

When home is under construction that is the time to put wires in the wall. Overkill is better than underkill.

I ran a bundled cable, (2 RG6, 2 Cat5e) to every room and pulled home runs to a central location. Then in major rooms ran another RG6, Cat5e to the opposite wall of the bundle. Then ran a separate Cat6 to every location just for future technology advances.

Also did wire runs for alarm system that will have 30+ zones and speaker wires in almost every room.

Think I pulled over 7000 feet of wire total during the rough-in.

I agree with Mark and BaldEagle. The more you cables you run now the better off you are in the future. Just make sure that everything is labeled or it could be a night mare later. You might also want to run an RG6 from the dish location to the TV2 location in case you decide to add a separate tuner/receiver there instead of running it off the TV2 output of your 622.

If I had it to do again I would run conduit to at least two or three boxes in each room. then run the conduit to the cellar. If you don't have a cellar run it to where ever a central point is with a pull string inside. Ten years from now you may want diffrent wires. IE fiber etc. This is just my spin.

I do a lot of new work and old work home theater, cable, dbs, and high speed network systems.

I like the open work method. Run all cables drilled through one inch holes through the top plate or the sill plate centered in the width of the stud and right next to it. If doing new work, use nail on electrical boxes, but cut off the nail holders along with the nails. Cut two 3/8" holes on one side of the box spaced 3 inches apart and 1/2 inch back from the lip. Using a 2 inch hole saw cut 2 inch holes at the top and bottom of the box where the cable entry holes reside. When installing the boxes in new work, drive 1-1/4" dry wall screws through the sides of the plastic boxes into the studs. The reason for this preparation will be clearly seen, if you will ever have to upgrade. Run all of the cables necessary. Apply clips or staples in the attic or in the basement to lightly tension the cables. It is important that the clips or staples are only in areas accessible after the walls and floors are finished. After installing all of the cables, tape the front of the box and all of the cables in place with blue masking tape.

If you never staple the cables onto the studs inside the wall, you will be able to take off the accessable staples and use the existing cables to pull new ones. The side of the studs will also direct push rods and guide any new cables you need to pull.

By preparing the box as stated above, a screwdriver can be used to remove the two dry wall screws holding it to the studs. Since the nail holding protrusions are gone, the box will also come out the front hole in the dry wall without making the hole larger. It can also be easily replaced.

Even in retrofitting older homes with wiring, I prefer to prepare the structure for future upgrades. Homeowners are so pleased that I can and have added new extra in wall cabling at very low cost.

You never know what new types of wire and cabling comes down the pike. A lot of new codes now require the removal of obselete existing cables, when installing new ones.

Thanks for the replies. I like the open method suggestions.

I am trying to be practical with the number of cables. Can the OTA antenna for local digital broadcast reception use the same cable as TV2 signal distribution? I want each TV to be able to watch digital local broadcast programming outside of the Dish Network setup. Thanks.

Yes, I developed the open work method from 30 years in the business of running wires inside walls.

Yes, I combine TV2 with OTA antennas all the time. Just use a spliitter in reverse.
