First of all, turning off the TV but not the HR34 is just a matter of sliding the switch at the top of the remote to the right and pressing {PWR}.
The remote window is just to the right of the DIRECTV logo, you'll see it if you point a flashlight at it.
Now as far as the SD Nag menu... this is an annoyance for those who run multiple TVs from one receiver, but with the HD menus they only render at one resolution at a time. Frustrating, yes, but it's been argued to death already in other threads, please let's not start it again.
There's a great thread here that talks about your options. The best is a component-to-composite converter that will set you back under $50.
Yes I understand that's $50 more than you want to spend, but if you're looking for a solution it's a good one.
