Just got a new install the other day, i got what looks to be a totally used receiver. Do you think if i call and get directv to switch it out i'll get a newer hr24? or will they send the same 23?

Probably not. The time to question it was when the installer called to say they were on the way and if they didn't have a HR24 to reschedule. DIRECTV considers the HR21/22/23 all the same, a HD DVR, which is what they advertise, not a specific model, except for the HMC/HR34 which is a different beast.

I have had my HR23 for 3-1/2 years without a single problem.
It has the bigger hard drive just like the HR24.

And kind of nice in a non SWM setup, no BBC's needed.
