I had an HR 34 installed yesterday which is working fine except for no sound through Yamaha receiver or directly from TV (note, I am using digital optical cable for sound and component cables for video as my receiver doesn't have HDMI). I can get sound if I use an HDMI connection with the HR 34, however, then I have to have a wire hanging down from my TV to the HR 34 and I lose the ability to hear the audio through my surround sound. The HR 34 replaced an HR 20. I have a DirecTV tech coming this afternoon, but I was hoping someone could provide some insight. Also, the tech yesterday didn't give me HR 34 manual which seemed odd to me.

There is no manual in the box for the HR34. If you want one you need to go online to the Directv site and download/print it. As far as your audio goes, I am guessing you do not have it selected/activated on your AVR. You also might want to check your optical cable as those are easily damaged. You are kind of double dipping as your component cables have audio and then you are repeating audio with the optical connection.

Maybe I'm not understanding your configuration, but the HR34 doesn't actually have an optical audio output. For audio, it has the analog composite, digital coax and HDMI for audio output. So what audio cable do you have going from the HR34 to the your Yamaha receiver?

You don't state the model of Yamaha receiver, which could help troubleshoot. I have an RXV-3000 which has 3 coax audio connectors. Unless there was a happy coincedence in the input you assigned your component inputs and the preassigned coax inputs, you will need to assign the coax to whatever input the component is assigned to. There should be pages in you owners manual discussing assignment, mine is in a section called advanced operations. If you can't find your manual, they are available in PDF form on Yamaha.com. You will also need to make sure the HR34 has Dolby Digital turned on under the Audio settings.

Thanks for all of the replies. I have a Yamaha 5760. Previously I had a digital optical audio connection between the Yamaha and a HR 20 DTC receiver which worked fine, using the audio from either the Yamaha or my Sony TV. The HR 34 does not have a digital optical output, so I had to chose the digital coaxial audio output as this Yamaha receiver doesn't have any HMDI connections. I had previously selected Dolby Digital on the HR 34. I also tried multiple digital coaxial cables, as well as adjusting the audio inputs on the Yamaha receiver, but I still don't receive any audio.

I'll let you all know if the DirecTV tech is able to solve the audio problem.

I disconnected the digital optical cable from the Yamaha as the HR 34 doesn't have any digital optical output. I connected a digital coaxial cable from the HR 34 to the Yamaha input #5. I then had to change the input # 5 on the Yamaha so that it recognized that the audio would be coming from HR 34.

Note, while researching this issue I came across a digital optical to digital coaxial converter from Monoprice which may be the only option for those who don't have an available digital coaxial on their receiver.
