I am in NYC (Queens) and I have just bought a new HD TV with 1080p and also have an older SD TV. I would like to order the Dish Bronze pkg + local+South Asian channels. Not sure about few things that the Dish folks are telling me - Do I must have 2 dishes installed for HD + locals (NYC) + South Asian? Do I need 1 Combo box VIP622 only or also the free (w/ monthly charge) 211? Any other suggestions before I place the order will be highly appreciated. AS you can guess I don't have much clues about these birds. Thanks

In NYC with locals and HD you would at least need dish 500 (110/119) and second dish for 61.5. SD channels for bronze are one 119, HD is split between 61.5 and 110, SD Locals are split on 119 and 110, HD Locals are on 61.5, South Asian channels are also on 61.5. The 622 is a dual tuner receiver with tv1 output for HD and tv2 output for sd, so the one receiver could be enough. Be aware there is a $6 lease fee and a $5.99 dvr fee on the 622 as well as the month BronzeHD with local and the South Asian Channel package.

South Asian are also on 118 so a Dish 500 Plus and a 61.5 wing would work also.

If 129 is reachable there a Dish 1000 Plus would do everything.

IIRC, the NYC HD Locals are only on 61.5°, which cannot be received on a 1000+.

Aknnyc, you will need two dishes, 1 to receive 110°/119°, and 1 to receive 61.5°. If you're in Queens, you can probably put in an indoor OTA antenna for your locals, but most of the Bronze HD content is only on 61.5° and 129°, and I'm fairly certain you cannot receive 129° in NYC.

Of the 26 HD channels in the Bronze Package, only TNT-HD, Discovery-HD, HD-Net, and ESPN-HD are on 110°. The remaining 22 are on 61.5°. There are none on 119°. The SA package and the NYC HD Locals is also on 61.5°.

You must be able to receive 61.5° or 129° in NY to get the Bronze HD package. You cannot receive 110° or 119° on the same dish you receive 61.5° on.

129 is impossible in NYC.

Gotcha. I wasn't sure so I left my statement open.

As far as the SA package I was under the impression that E* was migrating it to 118.75 and it was only a matter of time before it was phased off of 61.5?
I thought that was the whole reason for them bringing out the + dishes?

I'm in the mountain states. Do I have to use 61.5 for HD broadcasts or can I use 148? 61.5 is a difficult angle from where I currently have my satellite dish. 148 seems much easier.
129 is the bird that you're looking for, not 148.

129 is Echo 5
Don't know where your getting your info but 148 only has 4 HD channels on it.

Go to http://www.dishchannelchart.com/ scroll towards the bottom and click on the orbital position of your choice.

Or to get the exact cordinates for your zip code you can download the Sat finder program here: http://vps.arachnoid.com/satfinder/

My info is from the dishnetwork page for HD programming. I downloaded the SatFinder and it shows Echo 5 at 119. The only thing listed at 129 is Telstar 7.
The dishchannelchart.com site is however very helpful. I guess the info on the dishnetwork page is meaningless. It lists the satellites for each of the HD packages. No mention of 129, just 110, 119 and 61.5.

Just use the Telstar7 cordinates. Same slot but the birds are stacked.

In your area it would be 215/205 41.9

Thanks to the efforts of a handful of people here, we have a most excellent resource: http://ekb.dbstalk.com. This should be your first stop for information about Dish Network technical stuff. If you can't wait for the information to be updated (it may take as much as an entire day ;)), look for the posts titled "Uplink Activity".
