I have an H20 and will be replacing it with an HR20.My son has the HR20,and i noticed that he no longer has the option to Auto tune. Is there another way to do this? One more question: I am planing to add a DVD/VCR recorder to this system, will i be able to record from the HR20 onto the DVD or VHS?

Auto tune is when it changes the channel at a certain time, right???

If so, yes (in a way). Instead of changing the channel, it just records what you
wanted it to change the channel to.

As far as outputing to an external recording device, yes, you just plug in the
composite plugs into the HR20 and and then into the recording device.

I hope this helps.
VHS??? What's that???

I am only going to use it to transfer my old VHS to DVD like my wedding 45yr's ago and some of my Grandsons cartoons.

Will i be notified [on screen] before it records and give me the choice to record or watch?

Nope. It just does its thing. It will always record. You can just start watching it
and then press the record button to cancel the recording.

Yes, you can dub from the HR20 to your DVD recorder....BUT, you have to do it in two steps...if, for example you wanted to record something "live" from the HR20 to the DVD recorder, you have to manually change the HR20 to that live program, and then record from External Input 1 on your DVD Recorder (for example). If you already have something recorded on the HR20, you have to play it back "live" while recording it to the DVD player.

In other words, the HR20 does not have a "Tune To" @ Date/Time function, so there is no "automatic" way to do recordings to your DVD Recorder...if you change channels on the HR20 while you are recording a "live" program, your recording "changes channels" with it.

We have a feature request in to D* for "Tune To", so we can simply tell our DVD recorders to record from External Input at a certain time and date and it will then be automatic..
Thanks for all of your help.BTW: When i get my HR20 installed, i am sure i will have more questions.

No HD DVR that you can use with DirecTV has ever had AutoTune. This is a non-DVR exclusive feature for now.

Forgetting [Auto Tune] Will any DVR other then the HR20 Work on Directv? Record one program and allow you to watch another [without any monthly fee]?

DirecTV's own DVRs are the only ones that will record one channel and let you watch another with DirecTV service. The only workaround - and it would be a bizarre one - would be hooking two DirecTV receivers to a dual-tuner standalone Tivo. Man, don't go there. Just don't go there.

Yes. Sorry my answer was a bit terse.

Basically two active tuners. Either two recording and watching one of them live (or a previously recorded item) or one recording and the other being watched live.

Cheers,
Tom

The ability to auto-tune to a channel - same as if recording program without actually recording it is currently #47 on the HR20 Wish List Survey
