Newbie Help on Slingbox Choice for use with HR24 or H24

I’m kind of sick of waiting for live streaming channels so I’ve decided to take the plunge and get one of the new Sling Boxes for Christmas.
I’ve read of issues with HDCP, RF remotes, and more… can someone please answer a few newbie questions and provide any additional suggestions that would be helpful?

My equipment:
HR24 hooked up via HDMI to TV for video, digital optical to audio receiver. Cat5 wire available.
H24 hooked up via HDMI in bedroom, infrequently used TV. Need to drill hole in floor to run Cat5 cable.

I have NFL ticket but no premium channels (HBO)

1) Has anyone used the new Sling Box 350 vs 500 to provide any feedback?

2) HDCP: Only premium channels like HBO? Or does this affect more?
Meaning is it just not worth the risk, should you go component and just get the 350?

3) If I go Component to Slingbox for video red/white composite to the slingbox for audio, can I also run the digital optical to the audio receiver and have both the composite and optical out put simultaneously?

4) Any fear of signal loss or audio delay by hooking up with that method?

5) Is there any way to still use the RF remote with my HR24 and the slingbox?
I think the answer is no, but I really really like the RF remote so I’d consider putting it in the other room simply to not lose the RF in the living room. Potential downsides = needing to run Ethernet cable
The 500 box has wireless but the price is crazy and if you lose channels via HDCP seems pointless.

Any other suggestions for hook up?
Advice would be appreciated!

Advice would be appreciated!

It depends on if you want to drill that hole to run the cat 5 or simply use wireless.

I always recommend running a hard wired connection; but there is the effort versus simplicity factor you have to weigh for yourself which determins if you go with the 500 which incoporates wireless abilities.

As far as connection method to the receiver goes; I'd suggest component to eliviate the HDCP issue from the get go.

In terms of remote and slingbox control; you have to have it set to IR. If RF is a must in your senario, then use an add on piece such as what I'll attach in order to accomploisgh your goal as it works well and allows for the best of both worlds....

Although the Hx and HRx series receivers are either IR or RF (not both simultaneously); there is a work around available that will allow you to use both.

Look into purchasing a "Next Generation" RF converter:

Keep your remote and receiver in "IR" mode, then replace one of the batteries from the remote with the nextgen replacement battery thus converting it to RF use.

Thanks for the info.

I'm leaning towards the 300, put it in the bedroom, run the ethernet in the basement and drill the hole, keep it hard wired, then I don't have to mess with losing the RF feature in my living room. Too bad the "new" slingboxes don't have RF built into them.

I have a Slingbox 350 and a Slingbox AV. 350 is a nice improvement.

AFAIK HDCP is only on premiums and I _believe_ PPV.

My HR20 would simultaneously drive digital optical for a receiver and R/W audio for the Slingbox AV.

My 350 and AV are in sync with R/W audio + component (350) and component -> composite (AV, Monoprice part #7114) in tandem with a HR24.

FWIW I'm using a fairly old (802.11g) wireless to Ethernet adapter (Buffalo Technologies WLI-TX4-G54HP) and am ok getting an 8 mbit stream from the 350. But I also was pleasantly surprised--I was expecting to have to buy something faster.

Do you have whole home with any deca/cck units installed with internet injected into your dtv system? If so then you can run the Ethernet from the deca at the H24 in the bedroom to an Ethernet switch first then one output of the switch to the H24 and the other to the slingbox so you have wired Internet in there without drilling any holes. VOS has a diagram and/or picture of this somewhere. I do this with a Vulkano (similar to slingbox) and it works great!

Oh really?!? I thought the DECAs were only used to do the opposite, add ethernet to your coax. Yes, I have that setup so there's ethernet going to my box. It would be awesome if I could go backwards and pull the signal back to ethernet and plug into the slingbox. What's VOS? Can you give me a link to the diagram you are referring to?

I have a Hava ( similar to Sling box) streamer. I run mine wired and connect via component. The pq isn't true HD but its not bad either. Plus the app is free for android and iPhone. Never have sync issues either.

Yes it works this way too. It's basically just a MoCA adapter, but designed for use with Directv using different frequencies since the MoCA freqs interfere with the satellite ones. A "VOS" is a member here, code named VeryOldSchool. Look him up and PM him for the diagram link.

Thanks, I found some of his posts, I'll search to see if I can find the wiring diagram and if not PM him.

Can you paste a link of the type of MOCA you are referring to?

I just bought a Vulkano Flow for $89.99 at RadioShack.

Really annoyed to hear about the HDCP issues with HBO. I understand the workaround is to disconnect HDMI to the TV and use component to the place shifting box or connect HDMI to an active HDMI splitter.

What if you're routing HDMI from the DVR to a receiver and then to TV? Would I need to leave the receiver on or is standby mode of the receiver enough for the HDCP handshake?
