Does anyone know when DirecTV plans to launch a new DVR? I dont mean the HR21,22,23 series...Seems like those are all the same with minor changes. I mean a next generation DVR that has features that the current generation does not have..
P.S. I know TIVO is planned for late next year but that can't be the next time we see a new receiver, can it?

As far as I know the HR2x platform will be with us for a while. However, it's always adding features, and there are more to come, so keep reading!

Do you really expect two completely new platforms in a years time?
My understanding was that that addition of a TIVO receiver will have no impact on DirecTV's production of DVR's. They will continue to make their own brand of DVR's, which means that if they were planning on releasing a new DVR for say, mid-2009, it would not be scrapped because TIVO will be releasing theirs in November 2009 (FYI I Have no dates, just using these dates for examples.)

Everything you have said is essentially correct and there is a rumor HR23 in the works but afaik that only removes the need for BBC and doesn't add any functionality.

That said, D* is constantly working on new software and we never know when a new feature can hit the NR. Heck they have even let a few slip in and not told us maybe?

The only new features I see requested around here other than drive space (and possibly 1080p/30/60 but since I dont even see /24 in the boradcom chip spec who knows) are all implementable in software.

A full home DVR system useing wifi / e-net / rg6 has been talked about.

Put 4-5 + HD tuners + OTA with e-sata ports in add a disk mode will be a good system and way better then then 2 hd / 2 sd max u-verse limit.

I expect that overall, most changes here on out will be software based, not hardware... Yeah, we will see the HMC come out at some point in the next 2 or 3 years, but it will still have the same gui system as the current HRs.. only they will all be running the latest software out at the time... Maybe faster processors, and ability to do 1080p at 24/30/60/120 or something... but for the most part, I expect far more things to come from software development than from hardware development...

how about one with more ram as well a faster cpu.

how about more tuners?

bigger software flash space?

small flash disk or ram disk on the in side and add your own ext disk?

small flash disk and or ram disk on non drv system systems to give them a small live buffer?

HD spin down / sleep mode should be a on / off setting like power save mode on newer tv's

I haven't heard of anything at this time, but we're now 2 years into the HR20, 1 year into the HR21 (updated chipset & underlying OS) .. It wouldn't shock me to find out that DIRECTV is working on a next gen product. If they are, I have no clue as to when we'll find out about it, though.

We were only discussing DVR's... But while we are at it... Directv has said all Hardware will be DVR in the next year or so... Then it will be if the customer wants it activated or not...

Would that not be software driven?

e-sata as add a disk not replace the build in one or at least spin it drop on when you are having it replaced by the ext one.

cutting the hard disk and or makeing it likely the ps3 setup where a user can replace it with out voiding the warranty. Drop the hd in the system can drop the price and let uses buy one at the size they want.

There's one feature off my old Tivo that I dearly miss - - the ability to set the guide up so that you could look at a channel and see what was on that particular network for nearly 12 hours. It was a vertical listing with one column being what was on now on all the channels and then a second column with an extended listing for the channel you were highlighting. It was great for seeing what was on my favorite channels for the entire day.

The only broadcom cpu with inegrated wideband tuners (250MHZ-2150MHZ) and is also suitable for an HD-DVR is the BCM7335. I suspect that this is the cpu that will be in the next generation DVR.
The good news is that it's fast. More than double at 950 DMIPS compared to the 450 DMIPS BCM7401 cpu which is used in the HR21. The bad news is that it still has only one mpeg4/AVC decoder, so PIP is out.

Cool, thanks. It only shows five programs at a time, but is still very helpful.
