I don't want to put Earl under the microscope and direct this to him specifically, but any of you other folks out there with some "connections" want to let us know when we can expect the next round of updates? 0XFA has been a disappointment to us - our first "unwatchables" (10 in a row!) after five weeks of success, two resets within three days of one another, only our second and third resets ever, etc. Any chance of another interim update pretty soon since OTA is being delayed?

No one on Earl's end of it confirmed OTA was delayed till 2007.

It's just something a DIRECTV CSR said. For all we know the CSR was confusing OTA with HDTV locals being available via satellite to some customers area in 2007.

Are the recordings that are "un-watchable" being recorded on channels you dont have ??

I believed it has been confirmed that this not a random confused CSR, that all CSR are being instructed to use "early 2007". It's funny how many people post here with the preface "don't shoot the messenger", but are quick to blame the CSR staff for all their problems, not the softrware designers who fail time after time to produce the goods.

I have the HR20-700, why is it I have non of the problems described in this forum?
I've only had it for a week but so far no major issues at all.

No, they were not. They are all recordings that were made simultaneously with or in the 24 hours following the recording of the NFL Network's Thanksgiving night game in HD on ch. 95. That recording, and 9 others on channels we've recorded from for over a month, were all unwatchable. Either black screen you couldn't do anything with but delete (2 or perhaps 3), or you got the "Keep/Delete" dialog immediately upon trying to play. After a red-button reset those recordings were gone and the box performed normally again. At least until a GUI lockup three days later while browsing the description of a show we'd recorded over the weekend. THOSE are the kinds of things that must be eliminated before OTA, in my humble opinion.

So, when's the next update? Anyone with info?

There are a lot of posts already which describe why some people are having issues and some aren't, from powering the switch, to manual recording, to padding, to just plain dumb luck. You might want to check them out.

likely because you have had it only a week.

For example I am now on 5 days with out a lockup of bug. Who knows how long my luck might hold out maybe 5 more days maybe 5 minutes. I didn't change anything, I did not reformat, change my cabling or sacrifice a chicken, it is just working fine (right now) for some reason, but I don't trust it.

If I recall correctly, under this release I have had 3 or 4 lockups and 0 unwatchables and manual recordings don't work right, but since the last lockup, 5 days ago, it has been working great (outside of the manual recording bug) and it that was my only frame of reference I might think the box is great with one small bug that looks like an easy fix. Last release was only out a day or so before it was replaced so no time to truly evaluate it. Under the release before that I had 0 lockups but lots of the unwatchable Bug and partial bug. You will see 1 user who will claim that his box is perfect and that every one with problems has cabling problems and others where the box is a nuclear device with a hair trigger.

The appearance of most the bugs, lockups, unwatchables, ect. appear to be fairly random. I think it is sort of an entropy problem, the more you use it, the harder you use it, the more likely the bugs are going to present, these kind of problems can be caused by poor memory management, or poor management of any of the system resources in combination with poor exception handling in the code.

I wouldn't worry about it too much, just cross your fingers and hope you luck keeps up as you build up some hours on your unit.

Well as long as D* is aware of the problems and they are working on fixing them. How often are there updates?
