I have long felt that people have been over-critical about the HR20 and its issues. I had mine for almost 3 months and though I have had a few issues and complaints, they have been relatively infrequent.

That of course has all changed. All of a sudden, my HR20 has gone crazy. In the last week I have had the following problems, most of which have occured in the last 12 hours:

1) Sunday-The remote and front panel controls refused to function - a red button restart solved the problem.

2) Thursday-same problem as #1, but it happened twice.

3) While rewinding a program, the box all of a sudden changed to channel 201 and the channel I was watching disappeared from channel list (and not just from favorites). After a reset perfomed in #4, the channel returned.

4) All recorded programs when selected to play came up immediately with delete/do not delete message. One of which was one that I started to watch last night and had watched about halfway. After a restart, I was able watch the programs in My Playlist.

What the heck is going on?

jjaret,

You have joined a most dubious of club, and I'm sorry you have. Welcome doesn't seem appropriate, but we are here to help--commiserate, because there isn't much else we can do.

Of limited value, but at least proactive is to: check all the cables, make sure the dish hasn't moved (or at least that you have strong signals), and stand on your left foot the next time you RBR. ;) (Or is it now the right foot in 2007?)

May the fix be with us all very soon,
Tom

And don't forget to close your eyes and count to 100, then say in a high pitched voice that only dogs can hear "HR20, PLEASE PLEASE WORK!!"

A bigger question is why do people doubt the problems so much until it happens to them? Why does it have to turn into us vs them until they become us?
Epiphany From Wikipedia

As a feeling, an epiphany is a sudden realisation or comprehension of the essence or meaning of something. The term is used in either a philosophical or literal sense to signify that the claimant has "found the last piece of the puzzle and now sees the whole picture," or has new information or experience, often insignificant by itself, that illuminates a deeper or numinous foundational frame of reference.

The word's secular usage may owe some of its popularity to James Joyce, who expounded on its meaning in the fragment Stephen Hero and the novel Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916). Referring to those times in his life when something became manifest, a deep realisation, he would then attempt to write this epiphanic realisation in a fragment. Joyce also used epiphany as a literary device within each short story of his collection Dubliners (1916) as his protagonists came to sudden recognitions that changed their view of themselves or their social condition and often sparking a reversal or change of heart.

For the philosopher, Levinas, epiphany or a manifestation of the divine is seen in another's face, see face-to-face

In traditional and pre-modern cultures, and up until this day, initiation rites and mystery religions have served as vehicles of epiphany, as well as the arts. The Greek dramatists and poets, would, in the ideal, induct the audience into states of catharsis or kenosis, respectively. In modern times the Dadaist Marcel Duchamp and the Pop Artist Andy Warhol would invert expectations by presenting commonplace objects or graphics as works of fine art, simply by presenting them in a way no one had thought to do before.

Epiphanies have also made possible the existence of technology and the sciences. Famous epiphanies include Archimedes' realisation of how to estimate the volume of a given mass, which inspired him to shout "Eureka!" ("I have found it!")

Among hackers in the proper sense of the word, the word "zen" is used as a verb in the same sense as epiphany, to mean acquiring a sudden comprehension. Similar to grokking, but not done over time. The Zen term kensho would more accurately describe this moment, referring as kensho does, to the feeling attendant on realizing, for example, the answer to the question set by a koan.

I believe I've figured out the way to beat the HR20's BSOD and RBR problems:

Before you want to watch TV, follow these simple steps:

1. Face Southwest
2. Tilt your head according to the angle specified in the HR20 based on your Zip code
3. Pray to the HR20 GOD for exactly 20 seconds
4. Within 20 seconds, you need to turn on the HR20 and TV. If you wait you long, you get the BSOD, hence RBR is required.

I haven't figured it out the 771 message yet. Anyone?

I am sad you now have to suffer with us.

Now with the rest of us you will wait. LOL!

If only it was an elite club but it seems that these days the are letting anyone with 299.00 and willing to commit to two years of misery in our little club.

If only the problems would happen to an executive or an executive's lady friend at D*TV then we might get fixed. I would guess that they don't share our misery as they are still using D*TV with TIVO!

Save DLB, save the WORLD!

This is starting to remind me of my experiences when I was with Dish and had a 921. Nothing but frustration. When I switched to Directv last year, I was so pleased with the quality of the HR10 The difference was as between night and day. Then, when I got an HR20, I was reminded about why I left Dish. Freezups, lost recordings, a noisy unit, etc. Since I'm using the HR20 as secondary right now, and the HR10 as primary, I'm not that annoyed, but were it my only DVR, I'd seriously consider going to cable so I could use the S3 TIVO.

My hope is that when the Liberty Deal is closed, Directv will begin again with TIVO, and perhaps the TIVO software can be downloaded into the HR20.
