At the 18th SkyFORUM in New York City, National Rural Telecommunications Cooperative CEO Bob Phillips unveiled the company's plans to pursue a satellite broadband business.
"We will do whatever it takes to make it happen. If it takes a partner, we want that. If it takes an investment, we will do that," said Phillips. And, essentially, the NRTC is already in the mix of talking to other satellite broadband interests. "We have a couple prospect partners that could help us with certain issues, including orbital slots, licenses, technology" and other necessary items.
"We want to partner and there's no condition in our contract with DirecTV to partner with a competing company," Phillips said.
According to the NRTC executive, the proposed satellite TV merger between EchoStar and Hughes has slowed the progress of satellite broadband. "I never bought into making a monopoly in video and a monopoly in satellite broadband," Phillips said.
