NYC Locals issue

Anyone in NYC demo having this issue? For about 2-3 weeks now whenever I record on chs 2-11 (HD) I get blocky content and it freezes up until I FF, and in some cases I have missed up to 5 mins worth of programing. THis is on an HR20-700. This DOES NOT happen on any of my D*Tivos (SD), nor does it happen when I record off of the locals in the 80s. It's gotten to the point where I've swithed over most of my SLs to the 80s.

I haven't seen it on my recordings on either my HR20-700 or HR20-100, but at this time of the year I don't record much off of the lcoals.
My NY HD locals are fine.

Are you trying to record the HD or SD?
I recorded a program last weekend on channel 11 HD. No problems during playback.
Does NYC have MPEG-4 locals as well as MPEG-2? You may be able to narrow this down to MPEG-4 channels. It is very possible for MPEG-4 channels (which are typically Ka rather than Ku) to have reception issues while other channels don't if your dish is not perfectly aligned. (just a thought)

If you are not sure if a channel is MPEG-4 or MPEG-2, go to FFWD1 speed. It will be smooth (30 fps) if MPEG-2, and choppy (about 5 fps) if MPEG-4.
Yes, NYC has both MPEG4 and MPEG2 HD locals. The MPEG4 use the regular station channel number, and the MPEG2 use the 80s channel range.

Meanwhile I noticed last night that DirecTV is delivering WWOR-DT channel 9 in 1080i (using native on) when it should be 720p.
I have been having this issue for some time. The NY area locals pxillate and go black after sunset. They can come back anytime before midnight. The HR20-100 is able to bring in 2 thru 7 but not 11 and 9. The two HR20-700s are able to get 11 and 9 but not the lower channels.

During daylight hours all locals are fine on all DVRs regardless of weather or temperature.

Signal strength on all birds is at or near maximum.

It sounds like you have some sort of setup problem. I watch the mpeg4 NYC locals every night and never had a problem.
What sort of setup problem could it be since the problem occurs only between sunset and 9 or 10 PM? What do you suggest?

By the way, I am not in NYC but 50 miles north in Westchester county.

Dish alignment, bad LNB, old dish, etc. I would suggest getting a new Slimline dish.

I live in Central NJ and have no problems with my HD locals (never watch SD anymore).

I called D* and spoke to the tech department. He said this is a known issue caused by sun spot activity. He said it usually disappears by late summer.

This makes sense to me bcause it is not logical for Dvrs, Dishes, or Lnbs to stop working only at certain hours and only at the start of summer.

And you actually believed that nitwit?
