if there are any out there.....why do they even have Nashville Star on the air? No one has ever had real success with it. There's not one person on the show this year including the winner (whoever that is) that will be successful in the genre at all. None of them are good singers. They can carry a tune but cant SING it.

Buddy Jewel had what two songs. I dont remember a winner after that up until Chris Young and he's only had what one or two songs too. Miranda Lambert has been the biggest thing to come from that show.

Remember, Jody, your opinion of country music is partly shaped by KFRG-FM, which has a very restrictive playlist. When I was listening to country it would always bug me because I'd watch the CMA's and there would be all these great songs I'd never heard of, and KFRG was playing Toby Keith followed by Sugarland followed by Sugarland followed by Toby Keith.

I dont listen to KFRG at all for just the exact reasons you listed Stuart. Before I got XM in the truck, I actually listened to 1350 The Toad. I grew up with my grandpa listenind to all the old twangy country. Country has changed too much for me. But taking all that into consideration, even by todays standards I dont think any of these people on the show are good enough.
We've watched Nashville Star from its first season on USA.

We knew NBC would screw the format up which they have. I know there must have been country singers with great potential out there. This season's contestants are a strange group. But Melissa is a terrific country singer and Pearl Heart (now eliminated) is a country group with great potential.

Basically, the winners from season 2, 3 and 5 weren't the best to make it professionally in our opinion. We liked George Canyon and Matt Lindahl from season 2, Jody Evans from season 3 (Erika Jo is good, but she was too young and too tightly tied to her family), and Zac Hacker from season 5. Chris Young the winner of season 4 is a great voice in country music, but he was only 20 then.

Frankly, it appears that the great record deals the winners get ends up being a poor cousin in the stable of one of the conglomerates and it is probably the way it should be. However, Chris Young's first album is with RCA in 2006. He's touring and seems headed for a solid career.

Yeah, it's the country cousin of American Idol and belongs on CMT, though USA was OK.

I dont think NBC is the only problem. Who tells some of these people that they can sing? Most if not all of them (your two favs included) are trying to be like someone or some other group. Where did whatever her name is get the idea that she knew better than an established country (Im stretching it with that one) star in John Rich. Jewel is an awesome performer but shes not country. She may have switched from whatever you called her style to country; and found her a cowboy ( I may not like him but I will give him his respect ) but that doesnt make her country. When are the contestants going to be themselves?
Have you watched the country Duet one? I watched it when my partner was wathing it at home - the singing was much better there!

I am not much into music but I did watch" Can You Duet" I thought it was very good and had some really good singers on it. The husband and wife team was my favorite but they came in 3rd place I believe. I watched Nashville Star once and it was not nearly as good.

While I agree that these are hardly my favorite "unknowns" in country music, like American Idol contestants they are stuck singing songs identified with stars.

Well, John Rich wouldn't be my choice for a mentor for her.

Jewel's a great singer but from Wikipedia: "Jewel learned to play the guitar while at the Interlochen Arts Academy in Interlochen, Michigan, where she majored in operatic voice."

This is absolutely my pet peeve with the format under NBC control. This "mentoring" is stupid and these folks all have been singing awhile, so let's just listen to them.
I've tried watching this a couple of times, but, really... most of these people are just bad.

I have trouble understanding how these are the top 10 (or whatever the number is) "prospects" in country music. I've been to some of the bars in Nashville, and, IMHO, these kids would be hard pressed to get a gig.

I listen to XM channel 16 quite a bit, but I have to turn it off on the afternoons they have "Nashville Star" on. It's downright painful listening to some of these songs.

I do find it interesting that American Idol contestents (not just winners) are having tons and tons of success in the country music market, and, frankly, I don't know of a single Nashville Star contestent (which doesn't mean they aren't out there, but I personally cannot name a single artist who was on this show. And this season, the only ones I can name are Pearl Heart (wanna be Dixie Chicks) and Coffey (who was (is?) just downright horrible.)
