As you may have seen me post already, we have had a very bad experience with both of our HR21-100s. It looks like they were solved yesterday and involved a number of problems. I posted more specifics in the "Searching for Satellite" thread. However, there was one problem that our tech said was likely causing a majority of problems including system freezes, slow behavior, missed recordings and lots of goodies that required a reboot.

Namely, the initial installer had erroneously chosen (or somehow it was set during a reboot without me changing it) the wrong dish type. The right dish type for a straight Slimline-5 with no extra sats is 04: Slimline-5. Mine was one of the choices that included the 72.5 sat which we don't have installed and don't need. He said that for whatever reason, having any choice that includes that sat when the corresponding dish is not installed will work, but cause lots of weird behavior.

As well, he said that while they continue to see lots of problems with HR20 erratic behavior and overheating, he said that the HR21s have been very solid with very few repeat install trips. He confirmed that the largest problem with the HR21s has been bad BBCs.

Hope this helps.

Good info.

There is also a phenomenon where one dish type may display in the menus the wrong type dish, while the unit still thinks it is connected to the proper dish that it really is connected to, or vice versa. There were a lot of folks who ran into this during an up rev a few weeks ago. The fix is to select a different dish in setup, and then directly afterwards reselect the proper dish, which resyncs which dish you are actually connected to with what the unit thinks and displays as the proper dish. If that doesn't work, try a reboot after each selection.

Thanks for that info as well. As a relatively new user (45 days) of an HR21, the only constructive criticism I have for this board, which is common to many boards with loads of info, is that there is no summary of all the available solutions.

I think it would be very helpful to have a pinned post (or one for each of a handful of major issues) listing solutions only.

Good call. I had the same problem when I was configuring my HR21-100. I had the 72.5 dish in the set up as well and my DVR would not complete the Boot Process. Once I discovered I needed to remove the 72.5 from the set up, the boot process was successful.

The interesting case with mine is that it did fully complete the boot process and was even working (most of the time). It just had a lot of inconsistent behavior that required reboots. 2 days later we are still clean with no 771s (although an ESPN 206 blackout scared me yesterday :), no reboots, no missed recordings...including the ability to record Weeds on SH E and W HD for the first time in 10 days.
