One Thing i Miss about TWC........

....is the Cable Box always showing me the channel i'm on with out having to use my remote. If i'm making love on the sofa i would like to know what channel i'm on just in case...LOL. But seriously, my H25....my A/V receiver, and my TV, (which is HD), have no such thing. But the DirecTV box just shows the blue light.

If I remember correctly, the first generation HD receivers displayed the channel number on the front of the box. It was a nice little feature, especially for new customers first learning Directv's channel lineup.
A friend of mine had the same complaint, along with no clock. But I don't think you could dim it or turn it off, so that would annoy me.

You wouldn't believe the amount of people who complain about the lack of a clock.
I have a clock on the SA 8300HD stb - refer to it frequently, and it pops channel numbers momentarily when changing channels. Nice.

That would explain why after 11 years I only know about half of the channel numbers. I know what section to find something (200's or 300's etc) but if you asked me, for example what channel SyFy or FX are, I couldnt tell you.
I did like the clock and/or channel number that displayed on my Motorola DVR with TWC. The clock is no big deal, for $10 or less you can buy a digital clock with larger numbers and put it next to or on top of your DVR. And it would be easier to read. Channel #, you do have to press a button on the remote. I usually use the blue button, since the mini guide is less obtrusive then info.

I'm sure. But there would also be a large number complaining, though knowing DirecTV, they'd make it like the blue ring and have adjustable brightness.

I know fewer than that, but since most of what I watch is from the list it doesn't matter. I know my locals are on 4,8,11 but I have no idea which is which. Like you, I know the general area of channels, but 206 is the only channel I actually know (oh, and 501)
I'm similar to you. I do know which local is on which channel, but don't really have a need to know. I even record the 11pm news, so hardly ever do anything outside the list.

+1 here as well;

And is also why I really disliked it when DIRECTV removed the regularly updated "A-Z" channel list that use to continuously scroll on ch. 201 I think.

I use to rely on the list a lot to help me remember and to quickly locate channels.
The main DVR for Comcast had the option to choose the time/channel, but the other receivers had no clock or channel indicator. It would certainly be nice to have, but I guess I've always used the info button to see the time.
I know the channel numbers for the ones I normally watch. Its when my wife wants me to record something on a channel she watches that I struggle. The easiest way for me to find it is with http://waltzremote.com/, after you configure the channels in groupings. Then I can pull it up on my phone or my lap top.

Or use the search. You can search for the program or the channel name.

Knowing specific channel numbers is so 1970s.

True, but the search is rather cumbersome, with several steps. With the Walts Remote App, it shows the channel # and name, but you just tap the channel you want and it changes to it. So your really not memorizing channel #'s.

I just looked at it. Seems cumbersome to me. But to each his own. I'd rather use the real guide or the iPad app.

As they "to each his own". You probably haven't tried it. If you go in one time and group the most used channels the way you like it, then its easy to find. If you want ESPN, just three taps and you have changed to the desired channel.

Waltz App > Channels > ESPN (3 taps)

To use search on the DVR, its:

Menu > Down > Select > Select > Press 3 (2x's) > Press 7 (4x's) > Press 7 > Press 6 (2x's) > Down > Select (15 taps)

That's easier? Especially when the DVR starts running slow. The iPad App, I can't speak for, since I won't buy Apple products.
Low tech method here. I keep a printed channel lineup next to the TV set and refer to it once in a while when I know the channel name but not know the channel number I want to record or switch to.

I'm using FiOS TV now, but I used the same approach when I subscribed to DirecTV.

But you need to know what it is categorized under. And you need to be on another device.

I do this. Up arrow twice. Select. Espn!

Use it if it is good for you. It is too much work to setup for me.

I know that espn and national sports are 200s. Premium movies 500s. RSNs in the 600s grouped geographically. Premium sports 700s. Good enough.

Try apple products. They are very good. :)
I've had a DVR for so long I don't remember half the time what networks the shows I watch are even on. I've had market research people call me a couple of times asking about my viewing habits and it's kind of embarrassing when they ask "do you watch AMC?" "Uh, I think so..." So much for the networks attempts at branding! :)
