I'm baffled as to how one critical feature was left off of online scheduling: searching. It's nice that I can do online scheduling, but it would be able 10x more useful if they had the ability to search.

Has anyone heard if that's coming or not?

I had to do this recently, and found that you kind of can search, though definitely not as intuitively as you would think. Try searching for the show in the general DirecTV search box (as in the search box you'd use to search their entire site). Some of the hits you get back may include entries in the guide, which you can then expand to see the "record to dvr" button.

Or you can use the mobile version of the online scheduler, which does have search.. it just doesn't look as nice.

But it's a LOT faster. I will use the mobile version on a PC to schedule a recording.

And I use the mobile version as a guide when I am not at my TV (like what game is on TBS this Sunday).
